Hello, I have been trying for a while to use a headset with my laptop but it does not seem to want to work. The headset I am trying to use is the Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50X, and it detects that I have a microphone plugged into the combination jack on the side of the laptop but when I try to actually talk, it's as if I'm screaming into a pillow from across the house trying to talk to people. I tried to get some help from a friend that knows a bit about computers, but he was unable to assist me in fixing it. I'm not sure if it's an incompatibility between headset and computer or if it is a driver issue or something I am doing wrong. If anyone can help me figure out anything, it'd be greatly appreciated.

@kobaloi

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

If other devices are working and yet this one isn't,

I'm afraid your friend is right - the part isn't compatible and you may want to replace it.

@kobaloi

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand there's a sound quality issue with the headset/microphone being used,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Does the in-built laptop microphone work? without these issues?

Have you utilized any alternate headset with microphone to check if that has similar issues?

While you respond to that, here are a few things you can try:

First, rule out that the microphone problem is not one of the following issues:

  1. Software: If the microphone came with software, make sure it is installed properly and is compatible with your version of Windows.

  2. Power: If the microphone operates on battery power, make sure the batteries are correctly seated and are functional. If the microphone operates on external power, make sure that all the power connections are secure and the power cord is connected to a power source.

  3. Volume: If the microphone has a volume control, make sure it is turned up half way.

  4. Connection: Connect and disconnect the microphone from the computer port.

    • USB connector: If the device uses a USB connector, disconnect, and then reconnect the USB connector to the computer. If the computer still does not recognize the device, try plugging the USB connector into a different port on the computer.

    • Jack connector: If the device uses a jack connector, disconnect, and then reconnect the jack connector to the computer. Make sure the jack connector type you are using is compatible with your computer.

      Two types of connectors are available on HP computers. The connectors are marked with symbols next them.

      • Connectors on the computer marked with only a microphone  support input sound only and work with a standard three-pin microphone.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Yes, the in-built microphone works fine, it's just too sensitive for what I use it for and has poor quality. I also tried using a headset that has dual jacks (one for microphone, one for headphones) with an adapter that combines microphone/headphone inputs into one output and it has the same issue as with the headset I listed in the OP. I checked audio drivers and they are all up to date, the ones that I have at least, I'm not sure if I'm missing any. The friend mentioned could only assume that it was an incompatibility between a device a few years old with a new device but I wanted to seek another opinion just in case there is any way at all to fix the problem.

Okay, thanks for trying anyway, I'm not the best at wording so that may have been difficult to understand me. Wish there was something I could do to fix it.
