I have a dv7-7270ca notebook and since a restart due to windows 8 updates I now have a red x on the speaker icon.  I installed the HP driver for this model but it has an error in device manager that says:

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

Any help with fixing this would be greatly appreciated.  I did run an audio test using the shut down-F2 and passed and could hear the sounds in the test.  Thank You!!

I've managed to find the way to boot Windows 8 without requiring valid digital signatures (error code 52).  Seems the HP IDT High Definition Audio CODEC is not in compliance with Microsoft... interesting in itself, but until there is a new updated driver available this is what I have to do every time I boot the computer to have my sound back... a bit of a pain but when lWindows is loaded follow these steps.

* Go to PC Settings - General - Scroll down to Advanced Start Up - Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Start Up Settings - on the next screen use 7 or F7 to Disable Device Signature Enforcement

Love having my sound back, just a shame HP couldn't help.  Hope this helps some of you experiencing the same problem as me.

I have uninstalled it and restarted my computer many times.  Everytime it starts it reinstalls the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC all by itself with the same result ... no audio.  I have also tried uninstalling and then re-download the audio driver on the HP support page and it doesn't seem to fix it either... Any other ideas please ??

Thank you for your reply.  I downloaded the links you posted for the audio driver and the 2 chipsets for windows 8 as I choose not to upgrade to 8.1 at this time.  No change with my audio after reboot.  Still the red x, no audio output device installed and the same error in the general tab/device manager.

Did you want me to try installing the 8.1 set even if that is not my operating system?  Any other ideas???

Update which I think might be very relevant... when in my settings I see audio disabled and think that's due to the windows error code 52.  Does anyone have any clues how to fix this?

Can someone please help me with other options to fix my sound/driver problem?  Still nothing is working...

glad to know that you finally found a solution to your problem

**IDT is stable with Win 8 or 8.1

**it doesn't make any sense to find a driver from HP don't work with the system it was provided for

**please check the version you have from the driver and make sure it's Win 8.1 driver

**your LAPTOP main OS is windows which is provided by microsoft so make sure that you will not have a problem caused of the stability of the drivers or the system itself

**also check the version of OS you have and make sure it's genuine and clean not customized

oce more : glad that your problem was solved

Hi and thank you Mark.  It helps to understand that this is  a forum with many knowledgable people willing to help others  🙂  I was truly hoping that the problem would be resolved differently but at least the workaround will do for now.  IDT really did run fine until the restart after updates.  When I performed the start-F2 audio diagnostics and heard sound I knew it wasn't my audio that was the problem and most likely a Microsoft issue, especially with the error 52 in the general tab in device mgr. after the update.   I had a live chat with a Microsoft rep that told me to contact the mfg as it was a device problem.  I now have 6 downloads of the same driver... lol.  Funny thing was it truly does/did say that the digital signature was not valid so my thinking went back to something to do with the updates.  Then upon more searching I found how to make it so windows 8 would load the driver without a valid signature and voila... sound, beautiful sound !!!  Now all it says in device mgr is "this device is working properly".  I do regular maintenance and did run all the diagnostic tests and everything passes on my notebook.  Thank you for all your help and Kudo's to you for being a willing participant on this forum !!!  Thank you and I too am very happy that everything is running smoothly now.
