Hi @kenazaki,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy Laptop 17 is not detecting any audio devices and there are no Realtek drivers in the Device Manager, it indicates a driver or hardware-related issue. Here's a systematic guide to resolve the problem.

Check Windows Audio Services

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  2. Scroll down to Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  3. Ensure both services are running. If not:
    • Right-click and select Start.
    • Set their Startup Type to Automatic.

Reinstall Audio Drivers

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Look under Sound, video, and game controllers:
    • If nothing is listed, expand Other devices or look for Unknown devices.
  3. Right-click any unrecognized audio-related device and select Uninstall.

Install Drivers

  1. Go to the HP Support website and download audio drivers specific to your laptop model.
    • Look for Realtek High Definition Audio or Conexant Audio drivers.
  2. Install the drivers and restart your laptop.

Enable Hidden Devices

  1. In Device Manager, click View > Show hidden devices.
  2. Check if the audio device appears under Sound, video, and game controllers or System Devices.
  3. Right-click the device, select Enable, and update the driver if necessary.

Run Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Playing Audio and run the troubleshooter.

Update the BIOS

  1. Visit the HP Support website.
  2. Search for your laptop model and download the latest BIOS update.
  3. Follow the instructions provided by HP to update your BIOS.

Hardware Check

  • Built-in Diagnostics:
    • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly during startup to access the Startup Menu.
    • Select Diagnostics (F2) and run an audio test.
  • External Test:
    • Connect headphones or external speakers to check if audio works through them.

Perform a Windows Repair

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, the problem might be with your operating system:

  1. Backup your data.
  2. Use the Windows Reset this PC option:
    • Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.
    • Choose Keep my files or Remove everything, depending on your preference.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for getting back to me. I have tried the BIOS built in diagnostics and managed to get a sound out of the speakers. But no devices are shown on device manager and when I look for hidden devices I don't see any.  There is no sign of Realtek at all. I have tried to download Realtek drivers to no avail. I am not clued up on much when it comes to hardware or software. So I am reluctant to delete anything. I have gone through the audio Troubleshooter and this says every thing is working but it's not and I get no sound when pluging headphones in.

Problem resolved. I did a Norton driver update check and it revealed that i had a REALTEK BUS DRIVER that had an update. I installed this update and I've got my sound back. I have now made sure I have made a restore point.
