HP Pavilion 14m-ba090 x360 Convertible PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought my laptop (HP Pavilion 14m-ba090 x360 Convertible PC) less than a month ago. Everything has been working fine but yesterday, the internal microphone suddenly stopped working. I've been through all the troubleshooting guides (uninstall, reinstall, update drivers, roll back etc.) but nothing seems to work. Microphone appears in control panel but only seems to pick up internal sounds such as tapping on the keyboard. No vocal sounds or other noises are being picked up at all.

Can anyone help with this?

@Chensta

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I'm glad you've clarified as that would confirm a hardware malfunction, if the external/alternate microphone works fine but the internal doesn't.

I recommend you Contact HP to have your device either repaired or it's parts replacement to fix the issue permanently:

HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:

* Open link:  www.hp.com/contacthp/

* Enter Product number or select to auto detect

* Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

* Scroll down and click on HP contact options - click on Get a Case & phone number.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.

If you would like to thank me for my efforts to help you,

feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on the "Accept as solution".

Have a great day!

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand the microphone is no longer working,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Have you been ensured it's enabled on recording devices under speaker?

Did you reinstall the drivers?

While you respond to that, here's a few things that should help:

There are a number of options in Windows sound settings that need to be configured so that the computer recognizes and works with the microphone. Use the steps below to modify the sound configuration as necessary for your microphone.

Open the Sound window

  1. Connect the microphone to the computer.

  2. In Windows, search for and open Sound.

    The Sound window opens.

  3. Click the Recording tab in the Sound window.

  4. Then use the following steps to troubleshoot the microphone.

Step 1: Make sure the computer recognizes the microphone

  1. In the Sound window, click the Recording tab.

  2. Right-click an empty area of the Sound window.

  3. Click Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.

Figure : Disabled and disconnected devices shown in the Sound window

  4. If the microphone is listed as Currently unavailable or Not plugged in, disconnect it, then reconnect it to the port. If the microphone is still not detected, refer to the Check the microphone section of this document.

  5. Test the microphone by speaking into it.

Look at the gray bars next to the device name on the Recording tab:

    • If the gray bars next to the device name change to green, the device is active and an audio signal is passing through the microphone port. The issue should now be resolved.

However, you might still want to make sure the microphone is set as the default microphone using the Step 2: Setting the default microphone section of this document.

    • If the bars remain gray and inactive, the computer is not recognizing a signal. Leave the recording tab open and refer to the Step 2: Setting the default microphone section of this document.

Step 2: Setting the default microphone

The microphone you want to use might need to be set as the default microphone. Follow these steps to set your microphone as the default microphone:

  1. From the Recording tab of the Sound window, select the port that you want to use. There could be one or more ports.

  2. If the device you want to use contains a small circle with an arrow pointing down, the device is disabled. To enable the device, right-click the device name and select Enable.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

Hi,

Sorry, but I actually made a typo in the original subject, which I've now amended. External mic is working fine, the issue is with the INTERNAL mic.

I have already checked everything, including the checking the settings that you mention below.

I've also been through the standard troubleshooting steps by myself and with WIndows support, which included making sure it's enabled as well as uninstalling, reinstalling and updating drivers.

I have noticed that this seems to be a pretty common issue so I hope there is something I may not have tried yet!

The microphone was working perfectly until this week. While I was in the middle of a conversation, it started cutting out. The next time I tried to use it, it would not pick up my voice. It does seem to pick up keyboard taps though - the green bars move if I type or tap on the keyboard
