Hi @ath55,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue with your OMEN by HP 15 laptop producing weird noise from the speakers but working fine with headphones suggests it could be a hardware problem (the speaker itself) or a driver/software conflict. Here's how to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.
Test the Audio in Safe Mode
- Boot your laptop into Safe Mode.
- Play an audio file to see if the noise persists.
If it doesn’t, the issue might be caused by a software conflict.
Update or Roll Back the Audio Driver
Update the Audio Driver:
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
- Right-click your audio device (likely Realtek or OMEN Audio) and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Roll Back the Driver:
- If the noise began after a driver update, select Properties in the same menu.
- Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver.
Use HP Support Assistant
- Open HP Support Assistant (or download it from HP’s website if not installed).
- Use it to scan for driver updates specifically for your audio system.
Disable Audio Enhancements
- Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sounds.
- Go to the Playback tab, select your speakers, and click Properties.
- Navigate to the Enhancements tab.
- Check Disable all enhancements and click OK.
Test with a Generic Audio Driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click your audio driver and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Choose High Definition Audio Device and install it.

Check for Hardware Issues
If the above steps don’t help:
- Play audio at lower volumes to see if the issue changes (indicating physical damage to speakers).
- Run the HP Hardware Diagnostics Tool:
- Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly during boot.
- Run the Audio Test to identify hardware problems.
Prevent Automatic Driver Reinstallation
If you want to stop the driver from reinstalling itself after deletion:
- Open Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings.
- Under the Hardware tab, click Device Installation Settings.
- Choose No (your device might not work as expected) and save.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
