Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I'm running out of ideas and really could use some sharp help.  Had a crash, Windows recommended a total reset, did that. Then my speakers would only play if I had a plug inserted into an audio port or the mic port.  Remove the plug and the speakers stopped sounding.  The mixer still showed activity, but no sound came out of the speakers.  After a session with a Microsoft Tech Support Chat Agent and going thru all thier troubleshooting and driver updates, etc, etc. and still not resolving the issue, they recommended a Windows 10 update.  After completing that, NOW the pc doesn't recognize the speakers at all.  The troubleshooter comes back with "peripheral speakers or headphones are unplugged", that's it.

It seems that some device drivers, codec, or other integril software that manages the audio ports and speakers is either missing or corrupt. Wouldn't think the Windows reset would mess with the BIOS but I haven't tried refreshing that? But that is about the only thing I have left in my bag of tricks.

Hoping there is a supper geek out there that might have a clue what's going on here?  Thanks.

Other data, info:

Audio will play thru my HDMI port to my LG Sound Bar,

Device Manager:

-Audio inputs and outputs

AMD HDMI Output (AMD High Definition Audio Device)

-Sound devices

     AMD High Definition Audio Device

IDT High Definition Audio CODEC  [this may have been installed during troubleshooting)

There is one flag for an Unknown device  under "Other Devices"

I have attempted to search and install a driver for this with no sucess. Have even uninstalled it, but it comes back.  So haven't a clue what its for.

Suppose I could do that. I still have a 750GB hard drive with a booable Windows 7 on a CD Tray that I could slide in and see if everything comes bach just to confirm its that last Win 10 build that messed things up.  At least for now everyhing is getting by as long as I keep the mic audio input plugged. Since I never use a wired external mic (everything is now bluetooth) I supose it has become moot.  I appreciate all your help, and I guess in a way by at least getting the drivers that fixed the IDT not recognizing the speakers to where the mic plug works, the problem in one way has been solved. So I'm gonna give you a thumbs up.

As you may be aware, HP does not support your notebook or any PC made prior to August 2013 for W10.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to see if this W10 IDT audio driver from a newer model notebook also works for yours.   Install and restart the PC.

This package contains the driver that enables the IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.

If that one doesn't work, try this one instead...

As for the unknown device, please post the hardware ID for it and I will post the link to the driver you need.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID...

Thank you, Thank you.

That first IDT driver pack did something, it returned the problem back to where the speakers only working when I plug a jack into an audio port or the mic port.  So, that in itself is a major score becasue at least there is a hillbilly fix there that would allow me to use the PC speakers.

However, now it still begs the question, what's up with that?? I notice the Device Manager now shows the full group of devices listed under the Audio Inputs.  Is there something with one of those that might effect the audio jacks and speaker relationship? OR would the second patch you sent would do something more?

One more thing I just discovered, if I plug the Mic - Audio In port, then the speakers work, and if I then plug in headphones, they work and the speakers cut out as they are supposed to.  ??

Again, I appreciate getting back to at least here, but would prefer to get it working properly if possible.  Any thoughts on that?

And Yes, I'm aware that my PC is old, but other than a new fan, it has been a champ.  I have upgraded the RAM and hard drive and it has performed well.  I disagree with HP that it is outdated and obsolete, it still (other than this problem) will out perform most notebooks that are being sold as new.  Anyway, I digress...

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately since neither audio driver didn't completely solve the issue, I would not be able to answer any of your follow on questions.

These are some of the reasons why HP drew a cutoff line regarding W10 support for older model PC's.

Also, I am discovering by reading many forum posts, that on some of the older Windows builds, the PC's work fine, but as Microsoft rolls out the newer builds such as the Fall Creator's Edition, problems arise with devices such as the audio, graphics and wireless.  And what fixes used to work for issues on the older builds of W10, no longer work on the latest build.

So, you may want to go back to a previous version of Windows 10 where everything was working for you.
