After re-installing the system (OS Windows XP SP3) the audio no longer works.
I've tried to download a lot of drivers from the web, but none works.
I can't find the "official" driver (the laptop is no longer supported by HP, and I can't find anything on the official website).
Can anyone help me?
Thanks

Hi:
Since PC support has been retired by HP for that model, I can't find any specs for it.
Does your notebook have an Intel or AMD processor?
Does it have the Intel or Nvidia chipset?

You're very welcome.
There are only two audio drivers that will work, so I will assume that since your notebook has an Intel processor that it also has an Intel chipset.
Try this driver first...
This package contains the driver for ADI 1981B audio for listed notebook models and operating systems.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp28501-29000/sp28552.exe
If that one doesn't work, then it has to be this one...
This contains the ADI 1981B Audio driver for the NVIDIA chipset in the notebook models listed.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp27001-27500/sp27325.exe

The first one installs correctly, but then the audio doesn't work.
The second completes the installation, but at the end appears a message which, translated into English, says about "Driver not found! Reboot the system and execute this configuration again". If I try to reboot and re-install, nothing changes...

Sorry that neither of those drivers didn't work.
Now we have to figure out why.
Go to the device manager, click on the multimedia audio controller needing the driver.
Click on the Details tab, and post the hardware ID that you see listed in the Details tab.
The ID will be arranged something like this...PCI\VEN_1002&dev_4341&subsys_006B103C

You're very welcome.
The first driver I posted should have worked because it contains driver support for the hardware ID you posted.
Here is a partial copy and paste of the driver setup information file.

So the only suggestion I can offer would be to try manually installing the driver as follows...
Go to the device manager. Click on the Multimedia audio controller needing the driver.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update driver.
Select the No, not this time option, click Next.
Select Install from list or a specific location. Click Next
Select the Don't search, I will choose the driver to install. Click Next.
Click on Have Disk and browse to: C:\ SWSetup\sp28552\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP\smwdmATI (inf) file, click Next and hopefully the driver will install and the sound will work after restarting the PC.

I followed the manual installation procedure you described, and the audio started working! (without rebooting).
Then, after a reboot, the audio stopped working again ....
Re-installing manually the driver has no effect (I've heard the audio only one time, after the first manual installation).
That' very strange...

Yes, that is very strange.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what you need to do to fix the issue.
You now know you have the right driver and the sound worked.
The only outside chance suggestion I can offer would be to install the Intel chipset driver, restart the PC, and see if that helps any.
