I have the Conexant SmartAudio HD sound system on my machine.
I have researched this issue extensively and it seems that many people report not having Stereo Mix available to Audio recording devices.
I have tried every suggested fix detailed on this forum and eleswhere on the internet with no success, including modifying the driver .inf file before installation, and even a factory reset.
I would be very grateful if anyone has any untried suggestion for me.

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that the Stereo Mix feature is missing on your HP ENVY Notebook 15-as050sa.
This issue has occurred because Microsoft has stopped this feature in Window 10 operating system.
However, you may try to update the audio drivers and check.
And here's the step by step guide for you to download and install it in the link: Conexant High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver (Windows 10 v1607)
Let me know how this works.
You have a good day ahead.

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.
This issue could occur if the drivers are not updated in the device manager.
Please follow the steps listed below:
1) Right click on the start icon and click on device manager.
2) Go to sound, video and game controllers.
3) Under sound, video and game controller, right-click on the High Definition Audio Device.
4) Click on uninstall.
5) Make sure you check the box which says "Delete the driver software for this device".
6) Click on uninstall.
7) Restart the computer and it will install the drivers automatically.
Let me know if this works.
You have a good day ahead.

I read and downloaded driver posted linkin your answer for missing Stereo Mix.
But it did not change anything. What is curious is that I have had Windows 10 from the begining and did not run into this problem until the las version...Windows creators version.
The bottom line is that I wish to record music and mic in Audacity and can't after trying every option I could find on the internet.

Hi @icashsystems,
I reviewed the post completely. Superb troubleshooting and spectacular effort to try and resolve the issue. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 As @Rainbow23 is out of office, I am jumping in to assist you.
Please try these steps:
Solution 1:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.
- Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.
- Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'.
- Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows and see if this has helped at all.
Solution 2:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.
- Select the Communications tab up the top.
- By default ‘when windows detects communications activity’ is set to ‘Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%’.
- Change this to ‘Do nothing’.
- Press OK.
If this does not work, try these steps:
Right click on the “Volume icon” on the bottom right corner.
b) Select “Recording devices”.
c) Under the “Recording” tab right click on the white empty space and check the box that says, “Show disabled devices” and “Show disconnected devices”.
d) Right click on “Stereo Mix” and “Enable” this device.
e) Highlight “Stereo Mix”, click on “Properties” and go to the “Listen” tab.
f) Check the box "Listen to this device", also change the drop-down box below "Playback through this device" to be your second audio device.
g) To verify that you've done this correctly, go back to the sound dialog tab “Playback”, you should now see both of your audio devices showing the little green graphs moving.
Also, uninstall the audio drivers from device manager.
- Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers. Then check the box delete the software for this device.
- Then restart the computer and reinstall the audio drivers from recovery manager by following the steps mentioned in the link.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂

I tried everything you suggested but it does not work for me.
This all happened when I updated to the last Windows 10 version just out a few weeks ago. Did not have the problem until then. I can't even turn off the internal mic. There is no communication option.
I can only get either the mic or the music to record but never both at the same time.
There is no stereo mix option.
I have deleted the drivers and re-booted the computer.
I have even tried alternate solutions like Virtual Cable and a few others and in the end nothing works.
I wish someone would tell Microsoft to correct the situation or give me drivers that allow me to record voice and music and disable the internal mic.
There is one thing that does work sort of. If the listen box is checked in recording it will pick up the mic in the recording but since I can't turn off the internal mic it pics up all the fan and internal noises and there is an unacceptable static hum in the recording.
HELP!

Hi @cashsystems,
I reviewed the case comprehensively. Brilliant troubleshooting and commendable research have been done here to try and correct the situation.Kudos to you for a job done excellently. 🙂 This could be a limitation with this version of Windows 10 regarding the audio drivers.
However please try these steps from these third party links.
Please do not click on any ad, image, link or download from these links as they are third party links. Only follow instructions and click on the link only to download the Conexant drivers.
Link 1 from driver easy: https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/fix-conexant-high-definition-audio-issue-for-windows-10/
If this does not fix it, uninstall the drivers again and download the Conexant drivers from this second link for windows 10.
Link 2: from Softpedia: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/Conexant/Conexant-HD-Audio-Driver-8665751-for-Windows-10...
If these do not fix the issue, then you will need to perform a system recovery to factory settings after backing up all your files to try and correct the issue as this could be a limitation of the new Windows 10 update. Please follow the option "Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly"
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
