I'm experiencing a persistent audio crackling/distortion issue when using my Bluetooth headset. I have confirmed the issue is not with the headset itself, as it works fine with other devices.
What I've tried:
- Updated the BIOS to the latest version — issue persists
- Tested with a different old version Bluetooth headset — it works
Key observation: I discovered an interesting workaround: when I open the headset's Sound Properties (via Control Pannel) and scroll through the properties panel, the crackling temporarily disappears. However, once I disconnect and reconnect the headset, the crackling returns and the workaround needs to be repeated.
This suggests the issue may be related to a driver, firmware, or audio stack setting that gets refreshed when scrolling through properties — possibly a Bluetooth audio profile or buffer/sample rate reset.
Request: Please help identify a permanent fix, whether through a driver update, registry tweak, or audio settings adjustment.

Hi @B029,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I Understand your concern about the persistent audio crackling, especially after already trying several steps on your own, don’t worry let me help you with this.
To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?
- The exact model of your HP device and the version of Windows you’re running.
- Whether the issue happens with all Bluetooth audio devices or only certain ones.
- If you’ve noticed the crackling during specific activities (e.g., streaming, calls, or local playback).
In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
- Update Bluetooth and Audio Drivers
- Visit HP Support Assistant or the HP Drivers & Downloads page for your model and install the latest Bluetooth and audio drivers.
- Sometimes Windows Update drivers are generic, while HP’s drivers are optimized for your hardware.
- Disable Audio Enhancements
- Go to Sound Settings > Playback Device > Properties > Enhancements and check “Disable all enhancements.”
- This can prevent conflicts that cause distortion.
- Reset Bluetooth Stack
- Remove the headset from Bluetooth & Devices, restart your PC, and re-pair it.
- This clears cached profiles that may be causing the issue.
- Power Management Settings
- In Device Manager > Bluetooth Adapter > Properties > Power Management, uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
- This prevents interruptions in the Bluetooth signal.
I hope this helps.
