HP EliteBook 9470m Notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The HP EliteBook 9470m notebook performance appeared to be degraded to the point a complete wipe and reset was required. This was performed using the built-in Windows tools to remove all personal files and folders, applications and OS. After reinstalling the OS, everything is functioning except the speaker in the notification area of the taskbar had an "X" through it.

After running multiple HP support sound diagnostics and attempting to install drivers from Windows 8.1, (unable to load drivers from 8.1 - installation was blocked) we are still unable to get sound on this device working correctly.

There was an Intel driver that was successfully downloaded and installed that apparently provides WiDi functionality, but the speakers/microphones on this device are still no longer working.

Any advice you can offer in resolving this issue is appreciated.

See if this works...If you did not delete the driver installation file...

Go to the device manager, click on the IDT audio device needing the driver.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update driver.

Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

Click on Have Disk, and browse to C:\SWSetup\sp59852\WDM\Vista\STWRT64 (setup information file), click Next, and see if the driver installs that way.

That would be the only other suggestion I can offer.

@Dave2U2

Please download and install IDT High Definition (HD) Audio Drive for Windows 10:

    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71501-72000/sp71886.exe

Regards.

Hi, @Dave2U2

You will probably have to experiment with different W8.1 drivers if sp71886 didn't work.

That is the only W10 IDT audio driver that IDT released to HP, and it was for the HP 242 G2 business class notebook.

sp63555 / sp64958 / sp65012 / sp65196

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/

You may never get the sound to work again on W10, and if not, I recommend you install the OS your notebook originally shipped with.

As a last ditch effort, you can try this...

Go to the device manager and click to expand the Sound, video and game controllers device category.

1. Select IDT High Definition Audio CODEC under that category.

2. Select Driver tab.

3. Click Update Driver... button.

4. Select  -> Browse my computer for driver software.

5. Select -> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

6. Select  High Definition Audio Device (Not  IDT High Def...  this is important.) and click Next.

A warning message may appear,  but click Yes.

7. Windows has successfully updated your driver software.

8. Restart the PC.

 The key is step 6.

Hi Paul - Thank you for your message. I'm still getting the installation fail message as previously described in this thread. However, I'm scratching my head because we have another Folio 9740m running Windows 10 Pro x64 Version 1909.  Here is the driver info for that device (audio works fine):

CaptureKSW2.JPG

There must be a registry setting that can be reset somewhere to allow the driver installation to proceed. I've tried troubleshooting application compatibility for all the .exe files in the MSI package setting them to Windows 8 and Windows 7 without success. That doesn't explain why the IDT High Definition Audio Codec still works on the other Folio 9470m in Windows 10 v1909.

You're very welcome.

The driver that you are showing in your screenshot, is for the Intel HDMI audio device which controls the audio out to a monitor via the display or HDMI port.

Oops. Grabbed wrong screenshot. Try this....

OK, so if that is the driver that is installed and working on your other Folio, then this is the W8.1 softpaq that has that version...

6.10.6425.0.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59501-60000/sp59852.exe

Give it a whirl and see what happens.

Try manually installing the driver if the auto install doesn't work.

No Joy. Installation failed as before with same message. Nearing my whit's end. I've tried troubleshooting application compatibility on the installation files (for Windows 8, 7 and XP) without success. Installation fails every time. There has to be a registry hack to work around this issue??
