Using the combined headphone/microphone port for line-in

HP Recommended
HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cs0119TX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We purchased a HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cs0119TX two weeks ago and cannot get the combined headphone/microphone jack to work as we were led to expect it would. Can someone explain how to use the port as a line in and disable the internal microphone which seems has no way of being muted whilst the line in is being used.

We want to record existing music into Acid Pro 8 as a new track and then add further tracks. We have been doing this for ages with another PC which has separate ports for headphone and microphone/line in.

The headphone/microphone combo port won't work work as line-in, it MAY work as line-out. On some machines, this port won't accept stand alone microphone and on some machines, this port only accept mono-microphone.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi Banhien and thanks for your response.

I understand what you've written in your explanation and am really disappointed that I was advised to purchase this machine by a HP representative with whom I had a long chat and who knew what our requirement was for having a line in facility on whatever laptop we purchased. It didn't matter to me if the line-in was seperate or as on most PC's as by way of the microphone  input port.

And not being able to restrict the active microphone to just that via a cable connection and not the internal mic is a further drawback.

Just how do HP expect a user of this product to simply make a recording coming from an external source without having to worry about sound interference from a internal mic on the machine?

Look forward to some sound advice.

Many consumers laptops/notebooks from many vendors including HP now only have headphone/microphone combo jacks. You can use USB sound card which has line-in included.
