Now it's time to do a special test
(1) You need a usb flash drive (type 2.0 or 3.0)
See section <How to Create a Bootable USB Drive on Windows>
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/create-a-bootable-ubuntu-usb-flash-drive-the-easy-way/
(2) Shutdown windows
(3) Start your notebook and boot from usb flash drive
(4) When linux is up, does the F11 works normal ?

Thank you so much for your help and whilst I am sure ' this is idiot proof' I have downloaded Ubuntu and Rufus and I just cant do it and I only have a 4gb Sony pen drive and no dvd / cd writer I think I am just going to have to live with the irritating Orange light and maybe I will take it in to my local Computer repair specialist at some point unless you know of a double idiot proof way of trying to fix this. Thank you once again

Back up the files of your 4GB Sony pen drive to your hard disk, then format the sony usb flash drive using windows explorer (right click > format ).

Try rufus again ...

Thank you Sony pen drive now reformatted it shows up in Rufus with that said it does not matter what i do all boxes are greyed out and I cant change anything have read the article you kindly gave me the link for but to no avail also ubuntu has many different folders that did not make any sense (well to me anyway!) so I thought it may be corrupted so i thought I will uninstall it and download it again and I cannot de-install it.
I think I will leave it for today and look at it again tomorrow, thank you for all your help.

Good afternoon, I have had a right day of it today! tried everything as suggested without success ubuntu was causing real problems to the extent the machine would not operate correctly as always it has (well as it can given its age!) I eventually managed to remove ubuntu thankfully shut down rebooted and it was back to working fine again! (still have orange light) I am just going to live with it for now and look at updating the ram from 2gb to at least 4gb at some point and revisit this problem again as to be far it is slightly beyond my capabilities even though you have been kind enough to take the time to make it as easy as possible. I just don't have the patience! or time currently. when all is working in my favour and ram upgraded if it is alright with you I will contact you again ? in the meantime thank you so much for your considerable help.
