The built-in microphone not working on my HP 16-af0063cl is not working.  I checked the Device Manager, and the audio driver for the microphone is installed.

I checked under Privacy and Security>microphone, and everything is turned on.

Advice welcome on how to fix this.  Thank you.

Hi @DRm818,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with the built-in microphone on your HP Laptop 16:

Confirm the Microphone is Enabled

  1. Right-click the sound icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner) and select Sounds or Sound Settings.
  2. Under Input, ensure the correct microphone is selected as the default input device.
  3. If it’s not visible:
    • Open Device Manager > Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
    • Right-click your microphone device and select Enable if it is disabled.

Check Microphone Levels

  1. In the Sound settings, click Device properties under the input section.
  2. Ensure the volume slider is set to 100% and not muted.
  3. Go to the Advanced tab (if available) and uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.

Test the Microphone

  1. Open the Sound Control Panel by typing "Control Panel" in the Start menu search bar, then navigate to:
    • Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording tab.
  2. Speak into the microphone and check if the volume bar moves.
    • If not, right-click your microphone and choose Properties.
    • In the Levels tab, increase the volume and test again.

Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Audio inputs and outputs and right-click the microphone device.
  3. Choose Update driver and then select Search automatically for drivers.
    • If this doesn’t resolve the issue:
      • Right-click the microphone and select Uninstall device.
      • Restart your PC to allow Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.

Run the Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Recording Audio, click Run, and follow the prompts.

Check for BIOS Updates

  • Visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest BIOS update specific to your model.

Test in Another Application

  • Try using a different app (e.g., Zoom, Skype, Voice Recorder) to ensure the issue isn’t app-specific.

Perform a Windows Reset (Optional Last Resort)

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Reset this PC, select Keep my files and follow the prompts.
  3. This step ensures a fresh configuration without erasing your personal data.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
