The built-in microphone not working on my HP 16-af0063cl is not working. I checked the Device Manager, and the audio driver for the microphone is installed.
I checked under Privacy and Security>microphone, and everything is turned on.
Advice welcome on how to fix this. Thank you.

Hi @DRm818,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with the built-in microphone on your HP Laptop 16:
Confirm the Microphone is Enabled
- Right-click the sound icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner) and select Sounds or Sound Settings.
- Under Input, ensure the correct microphone is selected as the default input device.
- If it’s not visible:
- Open Device Manager > Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
- Right-click your microphone device and select Enable if it is disabled.
Check Microphone Levels
- In the Sound settings, click Device properties under the input section.
- Ensure the volume slider is set to 100% and not muted.
- Go to the Advanced tab (if available) and uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
Test the Microphone
- Open the Sound Control Panel by typing "Control Panel" in the Start menu search bar, then navigate to:
- Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording tab.
- Speak into the microphone and check if the volume bar moves.
- If not, right-click your microphone and choose Properties.
- In the Levels tab, increase the volume and test again.
Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Audio inputs and outputs and right-click the microphone device.
- Choose Update driver and then select Search automatically for drivers.
- If this doesn’t resolve the issue:
- Right-click the microphone and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your PC to allow Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.
- If this doesn’t resolve the issue:
Run the Audio Troubleshooter
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Recording Audio, click Run, and follow the prompts.
Check for BIOS Updates
- Visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest BIOS update specific to your model.

Test in Another Application
- Try using a different app (e.g., Zoom, Skype, Voice Recorder) to ensure the issue isn’t app-specific.
Perform a Windows Reset (Optional Last Resort)
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, select Keep my files and follow the prompts.
- This step ensures a fresh configuration without erasing your personal data.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
