One thing to add to that. After I switched the update channel and the problem was fixed, I had no sound sometime later through the microphone. I had to click on the clock > the headphones icon (audio settings) to the right of the volume slider and, under input > Microphone (internal).
For some reason the system switched to Mic Jack input for no reason but I switched it back and now it works fine again on the Dev channel.

Thank you so much Jessicatair and ACAcoustics! 🙂 Beta channel with the update to Chrome OS 83.x solves the problem!
Note that you can't go back to Stable after its updated without it doing a 'Powerwash' reset of the local user (shouldn't be a huge issue though as most settings will be tied to your Google account not the local user), and doing that would likely undo the fix anyway until the Stable releases have caught up with the fix in the Beta release.
But if the release got to Stable with the mic problem in the first place, then there's probably not much greater risk by staying on Beta for the forseeable future!
Cheers again.

Glad something is working! The whole issue is appalling especially as people are so reliant on Zoom, Hangout etc. HP quite useless advising that it was a hardware issue and to send back the chromebook ( as if !) Thank heavens for this forum. understand Beta is a sort of prototype of OS 83 and seems to have has success. . Haven't tried Beta myself as the plug in mic works fine. My book defaults automatically to it, but it it might need a tweak of the settings in the clock box. All the best N

Notebook microphone has a quick solution to noise
First, when friends find noise in the microphone, they must first consider whether it is a sound quality issue. You can try to cancel the audiovisual to see if the noise is eliminated.
Second, through the hardware detection, you can quickly find the microphone problem. The more common one is the noise caused by the entry of debris into the microphone. You can check whether there are impurities or whether the vibration paper of the microphone has fallen off. If there is a need to repair the microphone of the team member
Third, the noise in the microphone may also be due to the relatively large AC component, which causes a certain failure in the sound filter, especially if the microphone's filter-capable capacitor has a problem. Need to be actively dealt with.
Fourth, friends can check whether the direct connection between the microphone and the computer is in place. If the contact is not strict, it will also increase the noise. You can re-connect to check for poor contact. The sound card inspection can also quickly find problems with the computer microphone, and problems can be quickly replaced.
What to do if there is no sound from the laptop microphone
The first step is to open the control panel and enter the hardware and sound management interface.
Click the start button, a control panel option will appear on the right side of the start menu. After clicking enter, a hardware and sound option will appear, and there are settings about the microphone.
In the second step, click the sound option to enter the microphone settings.
There is a microphone option in the sound control panel interface, we can activate our microphone here. The recording interface in the menu bar is about the microphone settings.
The third step is to turn on the microphone device.
If there is nothing in your recording interface, then right-click the mouse and choose to display the disabled device to see Mike's option. After Mike's selection appears, right-click and select Open. When you turn it on, you will find that your microphone icon is already active.
The fourth step is to test whether the microphone has been used normally.
Right-click the volume icon in the lower right corner of the desktop and select Record Sound. After entering, select the microphone icon, click the configuration button below to enter the microphone configuration interface, click Next, follow the prompts on the input sound interface, follow the prompts to see if it responds on the screen, if so, explain your microphone It is ready to use if you can not see the fifth step.
The fifth step is to change the microphone settings in the audio manager.
Enter the Realtek HD audio management interface and uncheck the mute in the microphone options bar. If it is silent, there is a cross on the icon, and the non-silent mode only has a small speaker.
