I call on discord a lot and a few days ago, all of the sudden, my mic started making this loud static noise. It sounds like loud TV static. I've checked on other websites if it's really just my mic or if it's discord and I've confirmed that it's my mic. When I call my friends they can't her my voice all they can hear is extremely loud TV static. I've tried restarting my laptop and opening up the plastic sides to see if there was anything wrong on the inside of my laptop and all of the wires seem to look fine. I tried to look up how to fix this but nothing was helpful. I don't know how to stop this really loud TV static noise from coming through my mic.

My son has the same issue on his HP chromebook, the mic used to work perfectly, i suspect that there has been an OS update which has affected the microphone drivers.

There is a work around, the headphone jack works perfectly when using a headset with a built in mic.

Hope this helps

I also tried a bluetooth headset and still get the static sound.  When i use the headset, it sounds like the static is only on the left stereo channel and right seems OK, but hard to tell for sure.

Is there a fix or an update that can roll back?  Considering it does it with the bluetooth headset, it seems like it's a software/firmware issue - not hardware.  I have two identical chromebooks and only one of them has the static.

This just happened to me also. I was in the middle of my Zoom class and my laptop shut off by itself for no reason. I turned it back on and started the class again and my mic wouldn't work anymore. Not sure about what to do. Especially because I need my mic to work for school.

I found that by recording with the headphones plugged in the static noise goes and the redording sounds fine, Be interested to hear if anyone has tried that on Zoom, hangouts etc to see if it works.  There seems to be no other fix.  My acer chromebook does not have the same problem.   The HP has been doing it since the last Chrome OS update

I have the same problem. It started right after my Chromebook updated to version 81 of Chrome OS. I do not have the problem if I plug in a USB headset and did not have the problem before the update.

We have the same problem.  It began on Monday 4/13/20. So far we have confirmed that the sound disrupts Google Classrooms and Zoom meetings.  She is unable to participate in her school classes and her fun "extras."  I've restarted her Chromebook, but I'll reset and see if that helps at all.

We are having the same problem, it started this week as well.  Is there anyway to reverse the update that caused this?

HP Recommended

As far as I can find out you can't reverse the update.  Apparently a fix is being worked on in the meantime using earbuds seems to work. You can switch audio to speakers while they are plugged in by clicking on the arrow by headphone sign in the bottom right and corner ( where it shows battery life etc

Encountering same static-y microphone issue on a  HP Chromebook 11-v010nr.  Using a corded 3.5 mm headset as a work around for now.  Powerwashing the Chromebook doesn't solve the problem.  Attempted to reduce microphone input levels via Flash but still hasn't improved.  HP needs to issue a fix for this ASAP.
