As title basically...  device looks right still in every way, device manager, playback waveforms on windows test or hp test.. but just no speaker sound after using hibernate a few times(unknown amount of times)… headphones work ok... but to get sound back from speakers a reboot is needed..  even the trouble-shooter resetting audio makes no difference.. no alternative sound sources available and its definitely thinking its sending audio to the speakers.. I'm a musician with sound engineering background so I've done the usual tests and checks and so fairly sure its a driver based issue or windows issue not user error.

It's not a recent issue, its been doing it since I bought it. but i've just been resetting the computer to resolve up until now where im getting more concerned my warranty is running out soon and it could actually be a hardware issue not a software one so want to get it resolved.

@stupink,

Let's try to perform a system reset on the PC.

You may follow the steps suggested in this support document for  - HP PCs - Resetting Your Computer (Windows 10)

For some reason, if this does not help then I would suggest you could try to use HP Cloud Recovery Tool which allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive.

If this option does not work then you can follow this link: HP PCs - Obtaining PC Recovery USB Drives or Discs Or else you may contact our HP support team to help you order a set of recovery media for your PC.

HP support team can be reached on this link

Let me know if you need any further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help you.

@stupink,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I recommend update the BIOS from the below link and check if it helps.

https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

Follow the steps in the below article to update BIOS.

https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

If you continue facing the issue, then uninstall the audio driver from device manager and then download and install it from the below link.

https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

Here is how it is done.

  1. Type "Device Manager" into the search field to open the device manager console.
  2. Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry, and click Uninstall.
  3. On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
  4. When the uninstall process is complete, remove the device.

NOTE: On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click the Delete the driver software for this device option to delete the driver package that was used for the device.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Thankyou for the reply.

I have always kept the machine up to date using the hp support software inc bios updates.

So I went to the remove device, and removed the Realtek, (there are also intel display audio, and Nvidia virtual audio device listed).

I deleted the driver.. then rebooted and installed the kaby lake driver (I have I7-8550U).

Upon reboot it now shows as Realtek audio. not Realteck HD audio that it did before.. and I now have no audio at all.. the windows audio troubleshooter says it cannot fix the problem. and I also tried to remove/resintall drivers again.

I also tried to remove and reboot and let windows automatically find new devices, but it doesn't find the missing hardware.. having installed the drivers selecting update driver, says I already have the best driver..

Unsure what to do next, i'm pondering uninstalling all of the things listed under audio,  I can't really make it worse at this stage...  input welcomed 🙂

@stupink,

I recommend you perform a system restore back to the date when everything was working fine.

Follow the steps in the below article to perform a system restore.

I don't recall a time where it worked fine, so restore was not an option. unless you meant restore back to the drivers that didn't work fine.. but worked..

Anyway, I'm more of a fan of working out the problem rather than buying a new car because I run out of fuel.. So I investigated some more, removing the correct new driver, ie the kaby  lake v1903 driver, and installing the wrong one for v1709 got it working again.. so the correct driver is wrong and the wrong ones correct..  hmm.. anyway windows then updated that driver with windows update.. but its working.. so now all I need to do is see if the issue is still persistant after a few hibernations..

Is the kaby lake V1903 driver supposed to work on a kaby lake cpu running windows v 1903?  I kinda feel it is.. but the driver just would not play ball, it showed up in device manager, but trying to play a sound paused the computer, and no test sounds working and troubleshooting said it can't fix the problem.

So an update now I have reinstalled the drivers and windows updated them.

To clarify, the V1903 drivers did not work(zero audio) so I installed the earlier 1709 and let windows update them.. this worked(audio but issues as below).

The sound is still working at this stage, but it usually takes longer than this to stop working anyway, im only having to do a reboot once every couple weeks or so due to lack of sound and its only been a couple days.

But an audio process is starting to become an issue. my cpu fan is raised RPM trying to keep it cool even under no useage load.

"windows audio device graph isolation" is using 25% cpu resource, "very high" power and power useage trend.  which clearly isn't correct.

I've done a virus scan, so I believe this to be due to the drivers..

Please confirm which are the correct drivers for my machine, I have the 15-cn0504na running windows V1903 fully updated.. so looks like should be the W1903 kaby lake driver? but this does not work and I get no audio with it? my hp assistant is happy that I have the best drivers having installed the V1709 and done a windows update on the driver to version 6.0.1.8656

@stupink,

Below is the latest audio driver (Driver version: 6.0.1.8656 Rev.F) available for your computer.

Thankyou that is indeed the one that didn't work installing after removing the device, but I tried installing it over the top of the windows update one and it installed fine then..

But still the same problem.. "windows audio device graph isolation" is using 25-30% cpu resource, "very high" power and power useage trend after entering and exiting hibernation.

Doing some research onto this process shows that if the process ends you wont get any sound.. so I strongly think this process must be crashing and taking out the sound.

Any suggestions or am I stuck with the problem short of doing a clean fresh reinstall of the whole system? (which may end up the same problem anyway)..  Restore isn't enabled so not an option. I have 150programs approx. so don't really want to do a fresh install..  I cannot think of what else I can do though? I use hibernate frequently so that I can switch off while certain programs are operating and they are mid-process so work cannot be saved.

@stupink,

Let’s try this out.

• Right-click on the speaker icon in the Windows taskbar located in the bottom of your desktop screen and select Playback devices.

• A window will open. Under the Playback tab, click on Speakers and go to Properties.

• In the next window, click on the Enhancements tab and check the box beside ‘Disable all sound effects’.

• Click Ok.

• In case you don’t find this option in the box, go back to the Sound dialog box and select the rest sound options like Microphone.

• After that, disable the sound effects.
