I turned on my laptop, and the display was not working + the caps lock key was blinking 3 long, 2 short. I followed the steps on another community post, and eventually got the display to turn on, but after a while it glitches out and freezes.

Hi @hregahego,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The blinking caps lock LED pattern on an HP laptop is an indicator of a hardware issue. In your case, 3 long blinks followed by 2 short blinks suggest a problem with the system's memory (RAM).

Here are some general steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Reseat the RAM:

  • Power off the laptop and disconnect all external devices.
  • Remove the battery if possible.
  • Open the memory compartment (usually on the bottom of the laptop).
  • Carefully remove the RAM modules.
  • Reinsert them firmly into their slots.

Try with one RAM module:

  • If your laptop has multiple RAM modules, try removing one at a time and see if the issue persists. This can help identify if one of the modules is faulty.

Test with known-good RAM:

  • If possible, borrow or use known-good RAM modules to test if the issue is related to the memory.

Update BIOS/UEFI:

  • Visit the HP support website for your laptop model and check if there are any BIOS or UEFI updates available. Sometimes, updating the system firmware can resolve hardware-related issues.

Check for overheating:

  • Overheating can cause system instability. Make sure that the laptop's cooling vents are not blocked and that the fan is working properly.

Run a hardware diagnostics test:

  • Many HP laptops have built-in diagnostics tools. You can usually access them by pressing a specific key during startup (often ESC, F2, or F10). Run a comprehensive hardware test to check for any other potential issues.

Check for driver updates:

  • Ensure that your graphics and chipset drivers are up to date. Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause display issues.

Perform a system restore:

  • If the issue started after a recent software update or installation, you may want to perform a system restore to a point before the problem began.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
