Hi,

My laptop recently starts up with a blue box that says Administrator or Power Up password

It takes hours until it lets me get to the regular start up screen where I can enter my pin to get in.

Any thoughts how to get by this problem?

I have the laptop up and running now.

Can I disable this somehow?

@TomP77, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The blue box you're seeing at startup is a BIOS-level Power-On or Administrator password prompt, which appears before Windows loads. This is different from your Windows PIN and is set in the system firmware to restrict access to the laptop before the operating system starts.

Here's how you can address and disable it:

Step 1: Access BIOS Setup

  1. Restart your laptop.
  2. As soon as it powers on, repeatedly press the Esc key (or F10 on some models) until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Select F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

Step 2: Remove or Change the Password

  1. In BIOS, navigate to the Security tab.
  2. Look for Administrator Password or Power-On Password.
  3. Select it, and when prompted, enter the current password.
  4. Leave the new password fields blank and press Enter to remove it.
  5. Save changes and exit BIOS (usually F10, then select Yes).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
