N5R10UA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP x360 11-k117cl (N5R10UA) and updated the BIOS via the HP website a couple days ago. After the update the system will not boot into Wondows 10. The power light comes on and I can hear the processor fan running. I tried to reset the BIOS by powerring down and the holding the Windows key and the "B" key when powering up. After 30 to 40 seconds the BIOS reset screen comes up and does a BIOS re-load or something. After restarting the problem is the same. No display od an HP logo or boot into Windows 10. Any Suggestions?

Rats

Technical term that means all things bad about the situation...

The following is not likely to work, especially since you have been "somewhat succesfully" back in the BIOS.

The attempt likely won't make things any worse.  (Can't boot is the definition of several ways of saying, "Rats!")

If it does work, you are "back in business".

"Press and Pray"

Forced Restart / Boot

IF a BIOS update is just stuck / stubborn / frozen-in-place half way through the update / boot process,

And / Or

If there are boot issues that prevent a complete or clean boot of the Operating System,

IF there is not actually anything wrong with the windows installation or the File System,

The following procedure might resolve the issue.

  1. Unplug everything, including power and all other externally connected components
  2. Press and hold down the power button for thirty (30) to forty (40) seconds
  3. Release the power button
  4. Plug in only basic components needed to start / boot the computer

  • Desktop:  Connect Power, wired mouse and keyboard, HDMI to monitor (and monitor is powered on)
  • Notebook:  Connect AC Power

  1. Switch on the system with power button - Click power and release (as for normal boot)

Hoped for Results:

  • System switches on, monitor active, mouse and keyboard responsive

If the issue was a "stuck" BIOS update:

  • Screen shows the BIOS update window with choices:  cancel / update
  • Wait several seconds; stare at it and contemplate actions. (The process will continue on its own after about 10-20 seconds)
  • BIOS update continues, completes, and reboots the system

When the system reboots,

  1. Log in
  2. Connect LAN (Ethernet)
  3. Connect other components (USB, external webcam, speakers...)
  4. General housekeeping (checks, more staring at it)

Thank you for the reply and you deftly completed the first rule of tech support - you did not make anything worse! Tried reseting the BIOS again but no love. Opened it up and pulled the CMOS battery for 30 seconds. Still a beautiful brick instead of a usable HP laptop.

Is there an HP BIOS reset/upgrade from USB drive?

You are welcome - too bad the effort did not get rid of the rodents.  (Sorry, too long at the keyboard - time to "walk away".)

Perhaps another Expert or an Agent will have something more to offer.

Were it me, I would contact HP Technical Support.  I tend to do that when necessary whether or not the particular device is under warranty.  Only HP can tell you what they will do, what (and if) they will charge, whether an issue is covered or not.

Before resorting to calling you might try making a BIOS Recovery usb. The BIOS file downloaded from your Support page when running it should offer an option to make one. You should be able to run it on any fairly late model PC.

With it inserted in usb port use the same procedure you used of holding Win key + B key while powering on. You may have to try previous BIOS versions also since the latest is what started this whole problem. You can see all versions by clicking on Previous versions tab on your BIOS update.

Thank you for your suggestions. Ran the BIOS updater for the laptop on my Widows 7 Pro Desltop computer (not an HP) and it copied files to a flash drive. I inserted the flash drive into the x360 and turned it on while pressing the Windows ke and the "B" key. The bios routine started but did not allow me to select the source of the file. It completed the normal process but in the end did not solve the problem. I tried the same procedure with another flash drive but could not get the BIOS flash executable to copy anything to the flash drive. After running the executable - sp93444.exe - the installation starts as normal but the screen to update or send to a flash drive never pops up. In about 30 seconds I get an OS error the "InsydeFlash Application has stopped working...".

I see in the newly created c:\SwSetup folder had sp93444 folder and many files inside that.

I have tried this on another Windows 7 computer and still get the "InsydeFlash Application has stopped working..." error message.

One more try. Made the BIOS update flash drive by using a Windows 10 laptop. Success in making the flash drive. Plugged it into the x360, pressed the Windows key and "B" key and powered up. Flash drive light flickered many times but the BIOS screen never came up. The caps lock now flashes a 2 long and then 2 short sequence-

I

"The main area (DXE) of BIOS has become corrupted and no recovery binary image is available. Also happens when updating BIOS."

Solution

"Typically no steps needed.

  1. Allow the system to complete its updates and changes.
  2. If updates are stalling, attempt Sure Start Recovery."

Seems odd that a simple BIOS update from a good company like HP would brick a perfectly good and working laptop. A search using the big boogle shows I am not alone.
