HP Elitebook 8730w
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)
Recently I got this laptop from somebody on craigslist. It works well, however, when I try to change the boot order and tell it to boot from USB or CD it asks for the BIOS Administrator's password.
I have looked online for solutions. I tried removing the CMOS battery overnight. I tried a LONG list of master passwords. I have tried key combos that supposedly grant access to the BIOS settings. None of these things jave worked. I found what appears to be a great program for resetting the BIOS settings but I need control over the boot order to use it, so I can boot the computer from a disc or drive with the program loaded.
So, my biggest issue is How do I change the boot order if I don't know the BIOS Admin's password??? How can I reset the BIOS Admin's password??? If anybody can help, please, please, please help me out, this problem is frustrating....

Hi:

You will have to contact HP technical support and ask them if they will send you a customized SMC.bin file that you can use at bootup to remove the BIOS P/W.

The HP business PC support # for the USA/Canada is:  1-800-334-5144

Thank you for the quick reply. Too bad there's no quick fix... Hopefully HP doesn't hassle me for not having proof of purchase... Anyway, best regards,

Contact HP and they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.

When talking to the HP rep ask them to escalate your service request.

Or download these files.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zu4kdgxm052l87d/AAAMi-kfX4AVH8oTCbsOM4X9a?dl=0

Insert clean USB flash drive.

Then run USB Image tool.

Choose the flash drive then click on RESTORE.

After restore remove flash drive.

Insert flash drive into locked laptop and boot. ”If HDD is installed remove before booting.”

At C:\OUTPUT   type CD..   “Then hit enter”

Type HPBR   “Then hit enter”

First thing is to save your settings.

Select #3 re-program.

Press “S” to save system information.

Type HPBR and hit enter.

Select   “FIRST RUN”

Then select model.

After reboot repeat same as above but this time SELECT “SECOND RUN”

You're very welcome.

Hopefully the alternative method posted by REO51ST will be the quick fix you were hoping for.

@REO, does the usb stick method require that I change the boot order to the usb drive at startup? When I try to change the boot order the computer asks for "BIOS Administrator" password (different than windows password). So is there any way that you know of to get it to boot from the usb drive without hittin f12 at startup and selecting from the menu? Without the password the system won't even allow me to change the boot order through f9 or f12. Thank you again for all the help so far.
