Pavilion 15z-ab100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My newer computer would not load WIndows 10. I was going through various checks and when I tried to load a previous BIOS by holding down windows logo key and B. I got to the beeps alright. But, then I had a black screen. I tried to download a BIOS on this older computer that was working. I downloaded the BIOS drive. I did not have a fresh USB stick. The program froze. I bought a brand new UBS stick today. I tried to download. I got as far as clicking on the drive. It started to download. The progress band filled all the way up and then the program froze again even though this was a fresh USB stick and I told it to format when it showed that button.  It said Windows would look into it and close the program. I waited a few minutes. Nothing happened. So, I shut this computer off. I had a hard time getting this older computer back going. I  got a white screen and it said it could not load windows. Scary. I finally thought of taking out the USB stick with the frozen download. I told this older computer to continue on to start. And, finally windows did load.

Apparently, the BIOS program from HP is not working.

I wonder if leaving the USB stick in with this frozen download for another computer messed this older computer up on restart. It may not work the next time and I will have two broken computers.

Thanks for the reply, please do create a USB BIOS update kit for F.27 and then install it on your computer.

Let me know how it goes.

@Canyonelf

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion Notebook - 15z-ab100 laptop. I read that the laptop would not boot to Windows. You tried to perform a BIOS rollback and it failed. I also, read that the BIOS download on a USB flash drive froze on another computer. Anyways, I have read your post comprehensively and you've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

Downloading the BIOS file to a USB flash drive on another computer should actually not harm the other computer because we are not running the BIOS file on that computer.

I suggest you to review the below steps from this HP link:

  • Step 2: Download a replacement BIOS file.
  • Step 3: Create a BIOS recovery flash drive.
  • Step 4: Recover the BIOS using the recovery flash drive.

If these steps do not work then I recommend you to contact our HP phone support to explore the hardware service options for your laptop.

Hope this information helps. Let me know. Cheers! 🙂

Thank you for the info. I did not see it before trying something. I did another factory reset. I was hoping I might get a few logins before the boot froze again. So, as soon as I could sign in, I did, and went to support.hp.com. After navigating around a bit, I got to the BIOS download. I downloaded it. I hope that solves the problem. I did get the bar for the pin after the restart from the BIOS installing.

But, I still wonder why the BIOS download on the other computer froze that older computer so bad. After it froze, it seemed to have some trouble with start up. I did a BIOS recovery with the windows logo and the B key. Nice and easy. Now, it is starting up perfectly. So, maybe I have solved the problems with both computers. I did it with the info I got on the hp support site. I'll know on the newer one after a day or so.

Both computers appear to be working fine. The newer BIOS on the newer computer is actually working better than the old one. Does that mean I should download a newer BIOS on my older computer? I think I read that a recovery gets to an older version.

Does it make any difference? Maybe I should be happy both are working and don't touch what isn't broken.

Thanks for the reply, glad to hear that your newer computer is working fine.

It is recommended to have all the drivers updated to get a better performance from your computer.

Recommend you run HP Support Assistant to make sure all the drivers are updated.

Please refer to this HP Article for assistance in using HPSA.

Hope this helped.

Thank you. I went to download the latest BIOS on the g6t-2200. I found out that my recovery directly from Microsoft must have erased the HP Assistant. I downloaded it. Then, I went to download an updated BIOS. The screen asked for operating system. That was easy. Windows. Then, it asked for version but it did not offer Windows 10. This is a Windows 8 machine updated to Windows 10. Now what?

Thanks for the reply, to the best of my knowledge BIOS is independent of the OS.

If Windows 10 is not listed, the alternate way to update BIOS is by creating a BIOS update kit on a USB stick on a different computer.

Please refer to this HP Article for step by step instructions.

Follow the procedure mentioned under "Updating the BIOS when Windows does not start (Windows 10, 8, 7)" section in the article.

Let me know if this helped.

Hi. We're getting closer. Since I bought this as a Windows 8 computer, and you say the OS and the BIOS are not linked, then perhaps the BIOS for Windows 8 will do. I checked on my computer. I have BIOS F.10. It looks like I can download F.27. I checked previous versions of BIOS and did not find mine listed. So, I stopped and decided to check back with you. The dates don't go back as far as  August 10, 2012. But, I think I can download F.27.

WooHoo!! I think it worked. This computer was working, but I knew when I did a BIOS recovery it went to a previous BIOS. So, I clicked on download. It had some trouble. It could not put a partition on for a recovery BIOS. It said Partition fail. I clicked on continue. It tried twice to put the new BIOS on and both times it said "Not Responding" I waited and finally it loaded.

I just went to msinfo32.exe and it said I had F.27 installed today's date.

Thank you for spending the time and answering my various questions.
