Hello,

I have a few HP EliteBooks that were donated to a non-profit where I work. We want to refurbish the comptuers and the money we make selling them go back to serve our clients.

I'm trying to unlock the BIOS. They all have no HDD.

The models are:

EliteBook 2560p

EliteBook 8470w
EliteBook 8460w

Are there master passwords?

Thank you for your time!

Contact HP and they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.

 http://welcome.hp.com/country/w1/en/contact_us.html

When talking to the HP rep ask them to escalate your service request.

Or download these files.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zu4kdgxm052l87d/AAAMi-kfX4AVH8oTCbsOM4X9a?dl=0

Insert clean USB flash drive.

Then run USB Image tool.

Choose the flash drive then click on RESTORE.

After restore remove flash drive.

Insert flash drive into locked laptop and boot. ”If HDD is installed remove before booting.”

At C:\OUTPUT   type CD.. “Then hit enter”

Type HPBR   “Then hit enter”

First thing is to save your settings.

Select #3 re-program.

Press “S” to save system information.

Type HPBR and hit enter.

Since your model is not listed select “SHOTGUN.”

After reboot repeat “SHOTGUN” a second time.

If you cannot boot from USB flash drive use the Image tool to build a HDD.

Then use the drive to boot the program on the locked laptop.

This program will not work on the 8470w.

It will not work on any model ending in xx70x.

You will need to contact HP.

Sorry.

 @RE051ST

thank you! I used Maziff's file yesterday from your direcitons in another post and it worked!

I did it a little differently, though, because CD followed by HPRB came up as "bad file name"

I booted into the USB and followed the prompt on the screen for "first run". then I selected number 5, which is a model 8460p not W. It then worked, and I ran the 2nd run. I notice it blanks the warranty in the BIOS but I assume warranty is out of the question since i'm not the original owner.

The other 8460 models don't boot to usb so i think they are  configured as such in the locked BIOS.

Thanks again!

You can make a bootable HDD using the same program that you created the USB flash drive.

Use this kind of USB to SATA cable to creat it on an old SATA HDD.

Then install the HDD in the locked laptops.

I never tried shotgun mode 2x because it didn't give the same error code that confirmed something changed with the 8460w's.

I will try and report back. Also with the usb to SATA how come the PC won't think it as usb?

You take just the HDD and install it in the laptop as the main HDD.

If you cannot boot from USB then this is your other option.

We have both USB flash and HDD's.

If it does not boot from the USB we install the HDD and boot from it.

I have to change the HDD from NTFS to fat32 right? At this point it is not recognized in the usb tool.

Thanks!
