I have been troubleshooting an HP Stream x360 Convertible PC 11. Originally I had a "CMOS Checksum is invalid ERROR-502 and battery is not charging" message. After updating the BIOS and swapping out the AC adapter with no results, I purchased a replacement battery (same as what was originally installed). I was able to get the OS to boot up HOWEVER the issue now remains is that the battery is not being detected. I also successfully upgraded the machine from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Home. In both versions of window, the battery is not being recognized (not OS based).
At this time, the machine does boot up directly to Windows without any error messages. But the laptop only works with the AC adapter plugged in. The battery icon in taskbar indicates "no battery is detected"(see pic). In settings, the battery is showing 100%. Troubleshooter shows nothing. If I'm missing a driver, it's been hard to determine which one as all necessary drivers were updated from Windows Update.
I ran HP battery check and the response showed.... "A battery was not detected. If a battery is installed, please re insert the battery and ac adapter to retest....pic attached. I did remove the new battery, re-plugged in the original and it did not boot up. So I reinstalled the new battery and it boots up but is NOT being recognized. What??? I'm scratching my head on this one. Not sure where to go from here.
I feel I"m so close......all seems to be in order except this issue. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated..... like if I should be doing anything specific to have the laptop recognize the battery, etc.. Thank you.

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Perform hard reset
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery (if removable) and AC adapter, then turn it on.
Update Battery & ACPI Drivers:
- Open Device Manager > Expand Batteries.
- Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery > Uninstall.
- Restart the laptop to let Windows reinstall the driver.

Hi Garp,
Thank you for your reply. I didn't realize there was one given until today. So to date I've gone ahead and:
- Performed a power reset
- Performed an EC Reset
- Uninstalled and reinstalled the battery and check physical battery connection (seated and secured)
- Uninstall and reinstall battery drivers in Device Manager
- Run the Windows Battery Troubleshooter
- Check Battery status in BIOS - does not recognize battery as being installed (see attached)
- Run HP Diagnostic tool (not recognize battery being installed)
And BEFORE installing the replacement battery, I did update the BIOS. The current version installed according to the HP diagnostic I ran is version F.05 from 8/13/2015. I have done nothing to the BIOS since replacing the battery.
Since the new battery replacement was installed, the laptop does boot up. If the battery were completely faulty or entirely incompatible, the laptop likely wouldn't boot at all. So the HP Stream x360 does boot with the new battery, but the system doesn't recognize it.
My thoughts at this point are:
1) I'll try to replace the battery as the one now might be faulty or incompatible, though I've replaced it with the same PSO3XL Notebook Battery. However it is a non-HP replacement battery (all I could find I believe) but made the point to buy the exact same one. Maybe the battery firmware is incompatible??
2) At startup, I still get the "CMOS Reset (502) The CMOS checksum is invalid" message, maybe I need to reinstall the BIOS again. However, unlike before, with the battery replacement, when I hit Enter or leave it alone, it does boot up to Windows. Since previous battery wasn't working at all, and now the laptop at least boots, is it possible the BIOS is still holding onto settings that were reset when the battery failed? Should I try installing the BIOS again with the new battery replacement now in place? And if so, please kindly direct me to where I can download the correct and latest BIOS for this system.
Thanks so very much for your assistance in this matter Garp! I'm trying hard here the best I know how to get this issue resolved as it's really got me stumped.

Hey there! Thanks for the detailed update.
Even though you've replaced the battery with the exact PSO3XL Notebook Battery, sometimes non-HP replacement batteries can cause compatibility issues, especially if the firmware is slightly off. If you can, try getting an HP-branded replacement battery. HP batteries are often better supported by the system’s firmware and drivers, which could help resolve the issue.
The “CMOS Reset (502)” error typically points to an issue with the BIOS settings, often because of a bad or missing battery. Since you've replaced the battery and the system is booting now, it’s possible that the BIOS settings were reset when the old battery failed. Reinstalling the BIOS could be worth trying, especially since you've updated it before the battery replacement.
Here’s how to reinstall the BIOS:
- Refer this guide to update the BIOS: HP Consumer Desktop PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) (Windows) | HP® Support
- Once downloaded, run the BIOS update utility (make sure to follow all on-screen instructions carefully).
Please make sure the laptop is plugged in and running on AC power during the BIOS update. Don't interrupt the update process, as it can cause further issues.
Lastly, don't worry—you're doing great troubleshooting this, and I think you're getting closer to a solution!

HI Gary,
Thanks for the last reply. So the challenge was and remains to get to and find the latest BIOS for this system. When you run the HP assistant and it tells you everything is up to date, there is nowhere you can physically get to the software used on the system. Usually when the system is identified, which the assistant does, it shows you the software and drivers that come with the system. Here I get nothing.
Based on my original cry for help on this forum ;-), I was given https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72489.exe as the latest BIOS (v.F.05) for this model_HP Stream x360-Convertible PC 11. Since I was able to get into the operating system. It would be great if you could just confirm that this version is indeed the latest. I believe it is. Having said that, I am still getting the “CMOS Reset (502)” error. But it does proceed to then boot into Windows. However, doesn't recognize the battery.
The only thing at this stage I can do to is get an HP-branded replacement battery as you suggested to see if that makes a difference. When I usually run good quality replacement batteries, they seem to work, and the fact that I can boot into Windows suggest something is working. So still has me puzzled.
Thanks for your help, if you can at least verify correct BIOS for this laptop, I'd appreciate it as finding the physical BIOS file was in this instance a bit challenging.

Hi, I'm looking to purchase a Genuine HP Replacement Battery for this HP Stream x360 11-p010nr (picture attached of my battery).
When looking for this battery, there are two things I just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.
1) On the batteries I am looking to purchase I see it says 'PS03XL Rechargeable battery' vs. PS03XL Notebook Battery? Is there a difference between the two?
2) On the battery I'm looking to purchase, the part no. is 787088-241. My battery part no. is 787088-221. I am seeing a different manufacturing date so does that mean it's a newer version or revision of the battery? So if it has a different part no, is it still compatible?
Thank you for this last piece of assistance.

Hey @Gtrainer,
Thank you for your response.
I recommend downloading the HP Support Assistant to check for any available updates for your BIOS.
As for the battery, the part number for your unit is 787520-005.
I hope this helps,
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Garp,
Appreciate your continued assistance and patience :-).
1) Garp, I did indeed run the HP Assistant. As mentioned in my previous correspondence, the HP Assistant tells me everything is up to date. The problem is I cannot verify anywhere what the latest BIOS should be for this system as it doesn't provide the software for this laptop. At least I was unable to find it so what I was asking is could you confirm or provide what the latest BIOS should be for this system AND/OR, verify the link where I can get to the very latest BIOS for HP Stream x360 11-p010nr. I did get the download in my original request and the version was F.05 8/13/2015. I did reinstall the BIOS, I still get the 502 error message.
2) As for the battery, kindly clarify the confusion that still exists as it will determine what battery for me to purchase. Please see attached where the top battery is my old battery that was in the HP Stream and the bottom battery being the new HP-Branded battery I would like to purchase (note, these are the only ones for purchase online). My confusion lies in that you mentioned that part number for my unit is 787520-005. That is referred to on the battery as the " HP Spare ". The Part no., however is different on each battery. My old battery shows 787088-221 vs. 787088-241. Bottomline, is it the HP Spare no. that needs to match or the HP Part no? If it's the HP Spare no., then this battery will work and that's what I want to confirm.
Thank you.
Eva

Hey @Gtrainer,
Thank you for your response.
The BIOS installed by the support assistant will be the latest version available for your device, so there's no need to worry about verifying a different version. If the support assistant shows it’s up to date, then it is.
The part number I mentioned, 787520-005, refers to the "HP Spare" number. You should be looking for the spare part number, not the HP Part number (which can vary across different batteries). So as long as the spare number matches, the battery will work. You can search for the spare part number directly online to find the right battery.
Let me know if you need any further clarification.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Garp for confirming the Spare No. is indeed the number to be looking for.
That's all she wrote. Thank you again for your patience and assistance. Hopefully once I get the correct battery, it will work!
