HP Pavilion - 15z-cw100 CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey everyone, I had this laptop go into a bios recovery and verification loop when it starts up. I've attempted to create a USB stick to recover the bios however when I download the bios - https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/closure/hp-pavilion-15-cw1000-laptop-pc/model/26183459?sku=5MU5.... It will not run at all and allow me to flash a USB. Does anybody have a working .exe I can use to flash the USB?

Hi @Vill4geidi0t, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion 15z-cw100 is stuck in a BIOS recovery loop, and the HP BIOS update tool isn't working correctly to create a USB recovery drive. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

Use HP BIOS Update on Another PC

Try running the downloaded BIOS .exe file on another Windows PC:

  • Download the correct BIOS update from the HP Support page.
  • Run the .exe file and check if it gives you an option like Create Recovery USB Drive (it should prompt you to insert a USB drive).
  • If successful, use this USB on your Pavilion laptop.

Manually Extract the BIOS File

If the .exe won't run, try extracting the BIOS files manually:

  • Use WinRAR or 7-Zip to extract the .exe file.
  • Look for a .bin or .fd file (this is the actual BIOS firmware).
  • If found, copy it to a FAT32-formatted USB drive and try booting into HP BIOS Recovery (Win + B method).

Use HP BIOS Recovery Mode (Win + B)

If you have a BIOS recovery file:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Insert the USB recovery drive (if available).
  • Hold down Win + B, then press and hold the Power button for about 2-3 seconds.
  • Release the Power button, but keep holding Win + B until the screen comes on with the BIOS recovery process.

Try an Older BIOS Version

  • If HP's latest BIOS isn't working, check if an older version is available on HP's site under Previous Versions.
  • Try downloading and running an older BIOS update to create the recovery USB.

Alternative Method: HP USB Recovery Tool

If nothing works, you can try HP Cloud Recovery Tool. This can create a factory recovery USB, which sometimes includes the correct BIOS.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
