My computer has a blue screen that says Bitlocker. I don't have a recovery Key ID. I'm ok to factory reset, but it doesn't look like I can.

@migueldt1, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're seeing a BitLocker recovery screen on your HP laptop and don’t have the recovery key. Let’s walk through your options.

Why You're Seeing the BitLocker Screen

BitLocker is a security feature from Microsoft that encrypts your drive. It can be triggered by:

  • BIOS/firmware updates
  • Hardware changes
  • Resetting TPM
  • Unauthorized access attempts

If BitLocker is enabled, Windows will ask for a recovery key to ensure your data is safe.

Option 1: Try to Retrieve the BitLocker Recovery Key

If you’ve ever signed in with a Microsoft account, the key might be saved online.

  1. Visit: https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account used on the laptop.
  3. Look for a recovery key associated with your device.

More details here: HP Support - Finding BitLocker Recovery Key

Option 2: Factory Reset the Laptop (If You’re Okay Losing Data)

If you’re okay with wiping the device, you can try HP Cloud Recovery:

Step-by-Step:

  1. Use another PC to visit: HP Cloud Recovery Tool
  2. Download and install the tool.
  3. Insert a USB drive (at least 32 GB).
  4. Follow the prompts to create a recovery USB.
  5. Insert the USB into your locked laptop and boot from it (you may need to press Esc > F9 at startup to select the USB drive).
  6. Follow on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.

Note: This will erase all data on the laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
