I just recently got my Pavilion, and just after I had updated it and restarted it I got a black screen after logging in. Could still open task manager and could still move around the mouse. I googled some and found that this was a recurring problem with HP's notebooks, and one way to solve the problem was to do a system recovery. I proceeded to do one, and after that the black screen was gone. I'm worried that this is gonna be a problem in the future, and having to do system recoveries from time to time doesn't sound very tempting.
Does anyone know what the problem is and what you can do to prevent it from happening? I really want to keep the thing, but at the same time I don't know if it's worth it if it's gonna keep doing this.

Hi madisa,
This is not new to HP support. We are currently investigating the current issue. However this is not an laptop or hardware issue but a problem in the OS side. New and old computers will be affected by the black screen.
This is a temporary fix for this issue and Microsoft is currently working to create a fix it solution
- When the black screen is coming,we can press “Ctrl+alt+del” to launch “Task Manager”.
- Click “File”--“run”,input “msconfig”, we can open the “system configuration utility”.
- Click “service”, disable “App Readliness” service, then click “Apply”.
- The system will show “Restart computer”, Click restart, then we can go into OS successfully.
Note: Disable the windows updates for the meantime since black screen wil REOCCUR AFTER WINDOWS UPDATE.

ichi

Hi Clifton_,
Glad to help!.. Regarding your question.. Well park the question for the meantime since this is a new arising issue from windows updates. Visit our forums from time to time since windows updates are cascaded randomly by Microsoft. Other options I guess is to ask peeps from Microsoft Support though.

Just turned on my x360 for the first time, went through Windows 10 setup, and restarted ...black screen, exactly as described here. The temporary fix has given me access, but it is almost 2019! Surely HP/Microsoft have worked together to provide a permanent fix? In this day and age, you cannot turn off updates, as they are there to protect you when weaknesses are found. Apart from that, I need Defender updates!
