Hi, I bought a new HP laptop a few days ago. When I went to sign off there was an update. I clicked on the update. Now, when I turn on the laptop, the screen is totally black. I can hear the computer is on, but nothing is on the screen. I got this HP laptop 3 days ago. Please help! Thank you.

Hi @Sparkplenty,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that you are experiencing a black screen after updating your HP laptop can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Disconnect all external devices such as printers, keyboards, and USB drives.
  • Remove the power adapter and battery (if it is removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and battery, then turn on your laptop.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Power on your laptop and immediately start pressing the Esc key once a second until the Startup Menu opens.
  • Press F11 to open System Recovery.
  • On the 'Choose an option' screen, select Troubleshoot.
  • Select Advanced options, then Startup Settings, and click Restart.
  • Once the laptop restarts, press 5 or F5 to start in Safe Mode with Networking.

Roll Back Recent Updates:

  • If you can boot into Safe Mode, consider rolling back the latest update that may have caused the issue.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click View update history and then Uninstall updates.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • If you can access Safe Mode, update your graphics drivers.
  • Right-click on Start, select Device Manager, and expand the Display adapters.
  • Right-click your graphics card and choose Update driver.

System Restore:

  • If you have a restore point, try performing a System Restore.
  • In Safe Mode, search for and open Create a restore point.
  • Click System Restore, select a restore point, and follow the on-screen instructions.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
