My laptop stays as a black screen when powered on, the fan is very loud suggesting it's trying to turn on and caps lock flashes 3 times but when looking it up it sais 3 flashes is a ram issue and ways suggested to fix it involve fixing it on a working laptop so I don't know if it's the correct issue.

Hi @Mkeeb,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop is displaying a black screen at startup with the Caps Lock key flashing three times, this typically indicates a RAM (memory) issue. Here are steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this problem.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all external devices and remove the power cable.
  • If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual electricity.
  • Reconnect the battery and power cable, then try to turn the laptop on again.

Reseat the RAM Modules:

  • If you're comfortable doing so, you can try reseating the RAM modules:
    • Turn off your laptop and disconnect the power.
    • Remove the back cover of the laptop to access the RAM slots.
    • Carefully remove and reinsert the RAM modules to ensure they're seated properly.
    • Replace the back cover and power on the laptop.

Test with One RAM Stick:

  • If your laptop has more than one RAM module, try booting with just one installed at a time. This can help identify if one of the modules is faulty.

Check RAM Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the RAM modules are compatible with your laptop model. Incompatible RAM can cause boot issues.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify if the issue is truly related to the RAM and whether it can be resolved with a simple adjustment.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
