Hi, sometimes when my laptop is on but has not been used for a while (1-2 hours) when I return I get a black screen with flashing power button. When this happens nothing I do will allow me to unlock the screen again - the device is completely locked up. The only way I can do anything is to press and hold the power button for 10+ seconds which turns the laptop off, then I can power up again. Can anyone suggest a cause and solution? Thanks

Hi @dave6758,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the black screen with a flashing power button on the HP Pavilion laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. Go to Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click on your graphics card, and select Update driver. You can also visit the HP Support website or the manufacturer's website (e.g., AMD or NVIDIA) to check for the latest driver updates.
Adjust Power Settings:
- Navigate to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select Change plan settings next to the active power plan.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Expand Sleep and ensure settings for sleep and hybrid sleep are adjusted appropriately.
- Also, check PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set it to Maximum performance.
Disable Fast Startup:
- Open Control Panel > Power Options.
- Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck the box Turn on fast startup (recommended) under Shutdown settings and save changes.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure your Windows 11 OS is up to date. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates to download and install any pending updates.
Run System Diagnostics:
- Use HP Support Assistant to run diagnostics on your hardware. This tool can help identify any underlying hardware issues.
Check Sleep Mode Settings:
- Sometimes hibernation and sleep settings can cause issues with waking up. Try adjusting these settings in Power Options to see if it resolves the problem.
I hope this helps.
