My laptop keeps going into a weird hibernation mode where the screen is fully black, it can be fully charged, plugged in, key lights show the laptop is on but the screen stays black, I took it in recently and the worker showed me how to fix it but that solution hasn't been working. He told me it was a power saving mode doing it but I can't get out of it or find anything about it online. I don't know what to do because I can't even access the settings to try troubleshooting, it was working perfectly fine an hour or two ago and has since gone back into this setting.

Hi @J-tink,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop screen is going black and it seems to be an issue with entering a hibernation or power saving mode, you can try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

Restart Your Laptop: The first step is to perform a complete restart of your laptop. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the laptop shuts down. Then wait a few seconds and press the power button again to start it.

Adjust Power Settings: If you can briefly access the screen, try to adjust your power settings to prevent the laptop from entering hibernate or sleep mode too quickly:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan.
  • Adjust the settings for "Put the computer to sleep" to longer periods.

Reset Display Options: If your laptop starts up, but the screen is not displaying, try this:

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to see if the screen responds.
  • Choose "Task Manager" and under the "Processes" tab, find the "Windows Explorer" process, right-click on it and select "Restart".

Check for External Display: Sometimes the laptop might be trying to display on an external monitor.

  • Connect an external monitor to see if it displays correctly. If it does, your laptop's display might need troubleshooting or repair.

BIOS Update: Ensure your BIOS is up to date, which can resolve some hardware-related issues.

  • Visit the HP Support page for your laptop model to download the latest BIOS update.

Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the computer and disconnect all connected devices.
  • Unplug the power cord from the laptop and remove the battery if possible.
  • Hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power supply (and battery), and turn the computer back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
