  • I would turn on my laptop, sign in and then be welcomed with a blank screen, what could be the problem please. This is really heartbreaking

I Understand your concern about the display issue, don’t worry let me help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?
 

  • The exact HP laptop model you’re using ?
  • Whether the screen is completely black or if you can see the mouse pointer or taskbar faintly.
  • If you hear any sounds (like the fan running or Windows startup  sound) after signing in.

Here are a few quick  steps you can try right away:

  1. Check display brightness – Sometimes the brightness is turned all the way down. Try adjusting it using the brightness keys.
  2. Restart with Safe Mode – Hold down the power button to force a shutdown, then restart and press F8 or Shift + F8 to see if you can boot into Safe Mode.
  3. External monitor test – Connect your laptop to an external display (TV or monitor) to check if the issue is with the built-in screen.
  4. Hard reset – Disconnect all peripherals, unplug the power adapter, and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Then reconnect and power on.

Thanks for your reply 

My laptop model is HP Elite book 840 G3

I have tried all the 4 options you gave but none worked 

It still gives a black screen 

I can only see the mouse pointer and nothing else

I don't hear the fan running but sometimes, I hear the Hp start-up sound, some other time I don't
