HP x2 210 G2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

A family member owns an HP x2 210 G2 (product # X9V21UT#ABA) and they're constantly getting the BSOD with a stop code of CLOCK WATCHDOG TIMEOUT.  Interestingly, it never reboots on its own as the error collection never gets to 100%.  Sometimes, instead of a BSOD, the computer just freezes, but it's usuallly a BSOD.

 

I've done some research, and most of the articles & posts point to the BIOS or driver issues.  I've made sure to update everything that I can find (both hardware & OS,) but had to manually do the updates as the HP Support Assistant never showed anything to update (yea... I had to manually update that too.)  I even updated the BIOS to version F.20 and made sure to set it to the defaults.  (It took me forever to do the few OS updates as the computer kept crashing.)

 

As I use the computer, I can go for hours of normal use without getting the BSOD, but sometimes it happens after only a few minutes.  If I run a Stress Test utility, the crash usually happens pretty quickly.

 

One of the things that they complained about previously was that the battery didn't last very long.  I had made some changes to their power profile and they said it helped, but I don't know how much.  This got me to thinking and I ran HP's PC Diagnostics (Windows) and it always seems to stop on the Battery Check at 10% (and after a while, the computer often freezes (no BSOD.))  If I run a component test for the battery, it does the same and stops at 10%.  If I run the same component test for the AC adapter, the screen only shows the message "AC adapter testing in progress...", but it never does anything else.  Now... when I run the same diagnostics within the System Diagnostics (UEFI,) everything checks out fine, and the computer functions without ever crashing.  I don't know if the power issues are related to the BSOD or not, but thought I'd mention it.  I've also ran the Windows utilities to check Memory and the SSD for errors, but they both came back clean.

 

UPDATE:  I've now even done a full system restore and the computer still gives me a BSOD.

I'm still having problems with this.  I've even done a clean boot, but the problem is consistent.  Sometimes it takes a few hours, but sometimes it takes only a few minutes.

 

I also upgrade the BIOS to F.31 and set it to the defaults.

It's been nearly 3 months now and I haven't gotten a single response.  Someone joked that they expected that of Dell, not HP.

 

So, after it constantly crashing, I finally did a clean install using the Windows 10 version 1803 that was just released.  It too crashed, which means that it isn't a corrupt driver or other file as I used the Windows Media Creation Tool to do the new installation.

 

What's very interesting is that when I was running a simple stress test, my wife accidentally unplugged the AC adapter and then plugged it back in a few seconds later (when she realized what she did.) and the computer immediately gave the same BSOD error message.  After I got the system back up, I repeated what she did and it blue screened again.  My guess is that there's something wrong with the power system / battery.   Note:  I've ran multiple UEFI tests for days and there's never a problem.  The only time the computer crashes is when in Windows.
