HP Laptop 15.6 inch 15-fc0110AU

Good afternoon,

I have had this problem twice since purchasing my laptop in May this year. It enters a boot repair loop that was only fixed by doing a system reset with a USB boot drive. I tried using boot repair tools via the command prompt and disk checks which did not resolve the problem. I am not sure if the problem is with the OS (Windows 11) or the hardware itself. Please advise on how to avoid this issue occurring again.

Thank you,

Hi @Raymond_Leonard,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for explaining the issue so clearly. A boot repair loop that only resolves with a USB system reset usually points to one of these root causes:

  • Corrupted Boot Configuration Data (BCD) or system files.
  • Faulty storage device (SSD/HDD) or bad sectors.
  • Driver or firmware conflicts after updates.
  • Rarely, malware or improper shutdowns.

Since you’ve already tried bootrec commands and disk checks without success, and the problem has recurred twice since May, this suggests either persistent OS corruption or hardware instability.

Steps to Prevent Boot Repair Loop on HP 15-fc0110AU

1. Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Go to Official HP® Support.
  • Install the latest BIOS, chipset, and storage drivers.
  • BIOS updates often fix boot-related bugs.

2. Check Storage Health

  • Boot into Windows (or from USB if needed).
  • Run: chkdsk /f /r
  • Or use HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart and press Esc repeatedly → F2 → Component Tests > Storage.
  • If errors appear, the SSD may need replacement.

3. Disable Fast Startup

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • This prevents incomplete shutdown states that trigger boot loops.

4. Perform a Clean Install (Not Reset)

5. Enable System Restore & BitLocker Recovery Backup

  • After reinstall, enable System Restore.
  • Save your BitLocker key to your Microsoft account to avoid future lockouts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
