Hi. When I started my laptop up I get a blue screen with this message
Recovery
The boot configuration drive is missing some required information.
File:\BCD
error code 0xc000000d

you'll need to use recovery tools.

Can anyone help? I don't have any installation media that is mentioned on the screen as I'm on the road.
Thanks

>Your antivirus is not creating any problem in this case. So don't consider antivirus here.

>To enter into recovery mode press f11 key repeatedly as soon as you press power button (This work only if you have a recovery partition.) If you get BCD error even if you pressed an f11 key on boot up it means you don't have recovery drive.

>If you have recovery drive and booted into it then please reply this message with available options on the screen.

>If you don't have a recovery partition try this solution

  1. Download windows 10 (x32) from this link.
  2. create bootable USB using Rufus.
  3. plug in this USB into the system and boot into it.
  4. Now try to Repair your computer option available at the bottom left corner of the window.
  5. Now you can see Advanced startup screen with few options select startup repair and follow on screen instructions.hpwininstall.png

If this doesn't help you then you need to reinstall windows.

To reinstall windows just click on Install now button instead of repair your computer option and select and delete C drive from the list and select next.

Follow on screen instruction and you are done.

This is caused due to some third party apps or viruses damaged the bcd file which contains all details about the drive on which OS is installed.

You need to boot into recovery mode and select option troubleshoot the problem that prevent Windows from start or similar and follow on screen instructions
I hope this helped you:)

Hi. Can you please explain what you mean by "boot into recovery mode"?

I have anti virus protection so I'd be disappointed if that was the issue.

Thanks

Do you mean the blue screen I get when I press the on button with Recovery at the top?

If so I can't see a trouble shot option but if I press esc I get options eg F2 System diagnostics.

Hi. Thanks very much for your reply. The f11 option did work.

My options are 1. Refresh your pc 2. Reset your pc 3. Recovery manager 4. Advanced options

Under Advanced I can 1. System restore 2. System image recovery 3. Automatic repair 4. Command prompt 5. UEFI firmware settings.

Which do I choose?

Ps I tried automatic repair but that didn't work.

Ok, you are now just one step away;)

Just select first option refresh your PC.

This process will take 20-30 minutes make sure u you have enough power backup.

This process will remove all installed applications and updates.

The list of removed apps will be shown on desktop.

Please Accept as solution if this worked for you:)

Ok. So by apps do you mean Microsoft Office, Lightroom etc.

Or are you meaning things like Facebook?

Hoping not the first list as that would be a big job to reinstall them. Some I don't think I can reinstall as they are old versions.

Great to only be a step away.

A thought. Is it worth trying to roll back the updates to a previous version?

I hope that makes sense. I know that I did that years ago on a different laptop and no apps or software were affected.

This is an entirely different issue but thought I was worth checking before I did the refresh option. Thanks
