HP 15s-eq1000 Laptop PC (8WQ33AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP 15s-eq1000 Laptop, I am facing the issue of Boot device not found (Hard disk 3F0) issue on startup.

To resolve this issue, i physically removed the hard disk from my laptop, cleaned it with soft cloth and reinserted in the laptop. Still the issue was not resolved, tried to update the BIOS, yet the issue was not resolved, then after doing multiple boots, at one point the laptop magically booted up.

After booting, I ran HP diagnostics and it showed no issues with anything, like processor, RAM, hard disk all passed the test. Only thing was it showed that hard disk had '1% wearing' which is not that big a deal i think since the laptop was bought 2 years ago. All the data on the laptop seemed in proper order.

I am having the latest BIOS of F.77.

For few days laptop was running fine, but one day I encountered the same 'Boot device not found' issue. When this issue occurred for the first time, I thought that it must have been hard disk issue, but then after doing multiple boots the laptop started working. But now I am not so sure, as to why this happened again, since HP diagnostics did not show any errors for the hard disk apart from '1% wearing'.

The first time the issue occurred I was sure that it was a hard disk issue, but then the laptop booted up and HP diagnostics showed no issues. I am not so sure now as to what might be causing this. Now when I am running the tests (in boot state since the laptop is not booting) its showing that no hard disk is found which it showed earlier as well.

Hard disk details:

PM991a NVMe 5112GB

Model: MZ-VLQ512B

Please let me know if further information is required. Thanking you in advance.

For anyone wondering if the problem was solved, I tried booting the SSD from external SSD connector. It was not able to detect. So i figured my SSD must be damaged beyond repair. Like I mentioned previously the SSD did magically started working a while back but that might have been a fluke.

I am really surprised to see the SSD get damaged in only two years. The laptop was used to check emails, surf internet etc. it was never heavily used. Also as I mentioned when the SSD magically started working, it showed a wear level of only 1% which is not that much.

Anyways, I had to replace the SSD. The new SSD seems to be working fine, I did notice that my old SSD was heating up a bit so I have decided to attach heat-sink to my new SSD just as a precaution.

The problematic SSD in my laptop was PM991a NVMe 512GB.

Hi @bhushanj,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how unsettling it can be to see a “Boot Device Not Found – Hard Disk (3F0)” error on your HP 15s-eq1000 Laptop PC (8WQ33AV), especially when diagnostics show no major faults. Let’s walk through this to try and fix the issue.

Understanding the Issue

The error you're encountering typically means the system cannot detect the bootable drive during startup. Since your SSD (PM991a NVMe 512GB) passed diagnostics and showed only 1% wear, the issue may be intermittent connection, firmware conflict, or BIOS miscommunication.

Steps to Resolve the 3F0 Error

1. Restore BIOS Defaults

Sometimes BIOS settings can interfere with drive detection.

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press F10 repeatedly during startup to enter BIOS.
  • Press F9 to load default settings.
  • Press F10 to save and exit.

2. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics Again

Even if it passed earlier, re-running tests can help confirm consistency.

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and press Esc, then F2.
  • Go to Component Tests > Storage > Quick Test.
  • If it passes, run the Extensive Test.

3. Check SSD Seating and Connector

You’ve already done this, but please ensure:

  • The SSD is firmly seated in the M.2 slot.
  • No dust or oxidation on the connector.
  • Use anti-static precautions while handling.

4. Consider Firmware or SSD Compatibility

The PM991a NVMe SSD is compatible, but some users have reported intermittent detection issues with this model on certain HP laptops. BIOS version F.77 is the latest, but if the issue persists:

  • Try disabling Fast Boot in BIOS.
  • Check if Legacy Boot is enabled disable it if so.
  • Consider testing with another SSD if available.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay in response from my side. I tried all your suggestions but my problem is still not resolved.

When I run the diagnostic tool, it just says that no hard disk is installed. This error was shown previously too but then like I mentioned before the laptop booted up magically. But its not booting right now.

If you have any more suggestions then please do let me know. Thanks.
