HP Envy 17

I bought this brand new HP Envy 17 that was delivered last week. Yesterday I tried upgrading the RAM, following the Maintenance and Service Guide. As directed, I had a grounded anti-static mat and ESD wrist strap connected to a grounding monitor, as well as anti-static gloves. I also disconnected the battery during the upgrade, again per the service manual.

Since then, the laptop won't turn on and the charging LED remains unlit, even with the original RAM installed. I called HP tech support and they had me try this (WIN + B/V + Power) which the tech said should have reset the CMOS and/or BIOS.

None of the resolutions worked, and so the tech set me up with a warranty repair. However, given the amount of time I've spent setting up this PC, I'd like to avoid setting it up again or, if I absolutely have to send it in, I'd like to avoid repeating whatever mistake led to the current situation.

Any advice for other things I can try to get the laptop to turn on? Also, how should I upgrade the RAM in the future? I'm starting to think I shouldn't have disconnected the battery, as I've never had to do that for any other laptop RAM upgrade. Or maybe I left it disconnected for too long and doing so killed the CMOS battery?

Ideas welcome.
