I forgot the BIOS password. I contacted customer service and they kindly sent me a SMC,BIN file with instructions to reset the password. I followed the instructions strictly, but after pressing F10, I just need to enter a password again. I also tried the USB Key and Hard Disk Partition.
This is the instructions:
Hello Tsvetan,
(Important!) If this notebook uses drive encryption, such as BitLocker, to encrypt the data on its drives, this process will reset the embedded security and make the data unusable. Remove any encryption BEFORE proceeding with this process.
Please find attached the SMC.bin file. Use the instructions below to clear the BIOS password:
PLEASE MAKE SURE DATE AND TIME IS SET CORRECTLY BEFORE RUNNING THIS TOOL .Please make sure USB key is formatted to FAT 32 and preferably on a blank drive.
Please follow these steps to clear BIOS password:
Save the attached file with this e-mail to the root of the USB key as SMC.BIN and insert to the system (or save the file to the root of drive 😧 HP_TOOLS)
- Press (Windows Key + Arrow UP Key + Arrow Down Key) all keys at same time and turn on the system
- Release all keys and press F10 at HP logo to go to F10 setup to (Reset BIOS security to factory default)
SMC command failure reasons
Wrong UUID is provided
Try different brand and smaller size USB key
USB key is not formatted FAT32
Make sure to use USB 2.0 port and not USB 3.0 port on notebooks that have both types of ports.
BIOS ,date and time should be current and updated.
Use hard drive method by using HP_TOOL partition, if there is no HP_ tools partition, it can be created in either of 2 ways:
Install the HP PC hardware Diagnostics to your hard drive, which will create the partition for you -http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/pc-diags.html
or manually creating the partition as follows:
1. Use a partition tool like Partition Magic to create a partition on a local hard drive that has a System partition with the following characteristics.
Partition type: FAT32
Partition size: 2 GB
Volume name: HP_TOOLS
2. In the new partition, create a folder called HEWLETT-PACKARD.
Then copy the SMC.bin file to the root directory of the newly created HP_TOOLS partition.
The SMC file is time sensitive and will expire in a week.

I was testing the Bios Correction Method described here: https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c02693833
Тhe result is a black screen and after 20 seconds the fan is turned on and so remains.
otherwise the laptop works perfectly, loads Windows..
I calmly enter the start menu by pressing the ESC key. With F9 can choose a boot device. I can install Windows from a flash. I just can not login with the F10 in the Bios settings-asking for a password!
This is UEFI based BIOS. My hard disk partitions is GPT.
Is it possible for this model to be other keyboard combinations for starting the SMC Command?
Thanks in advance!

My experience with a Probook 430 G4 was that when the Fast Boot was enabled in BIOS there was no way to get the SMC.BIN to activate.
I don't know if the BIOS has been fixed since.
Replacing the motherboard turned out to be the only working solution.

I have been working through this issue with an HP Elitebook 840 G3 and came across a solution that resolved the issue.
Initially there was no issue with getting the SMC.Bin to boot. When attempting the F10 however no password reset was presented but rather I was taken into the BIOS with access to everything except the ability to change the admin password.
I suppose I didn't scroll down far enough in the security settings to see the option to reset the security settings because I proceeded to make a horrific mistake and reset the BIOS to default. The probably wouldn't have been that bad except I had just installed Windows 10 Pro x64 with Rufus.
The Bios password was not reset, however Secure boot was enabled as well as fastboot. I from there was not able to get the thumb drive to boot the SMC.Bin with the instructions HP had provided.
Here is how I was able to resolve the issue.
I took the SMB.Bin and placed it on the thumb drive in the root directory for both partitions of the Thumbdrive I had used to load Windows with Rufus.
I restarted the computer and pressed escape once at the splash screen and as soon as the screen went blank I held the windows key and pressed up/down as directed in the email and released as soon as the splash screen came up the second time.
The SMC screen came up and I pressed enter which took me to the Bios unlocked again. I disable secure boot and fast boot just in case this was a fluke and proceeded to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the security tab and reset the security settings.
**USB boot was secondary in boot order on initial boot. After I got back in I changed to primary just to be safe but it didn't seem to matter if it was primary or secondary**
***Obtaining the SMB.Bin took all of about 10 minutes both times(thought I may have messed up the first one) and didn't require any other information that my location, phone # UUID, serial #. If you need the SMB.Bin just contact HP they were amazing***
Sorry to hear about your mobo replacement, I was in the process of the same when I stumbled across the solution.

Hello
I have done the exakt same problem as you.
Now i try to use the following as you described.
"I restarted the computer and pressed escape once at the splash screen and as soon as the screen went blank I held the windows key and pressed up/down as directed in the email and released as soon as the splash screen came up the second time."
But when i start the laptop, HP loggo appears, and i press Escape, the display wont go black, the HP logo disapiers and Windows boots normaly. Can you please help me with detailed instruction on how you did it?
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards
