HP Notebook - 15-dw0046nr

Upon startup, I get an error message reading "The selected boot device failed. Press <enter> to continue." Pressing enter does nothing. Research has led me to enable Legacy Boot but then I get an error message saying "No bootable device. Insert boot disk." I don't have a disk.

Ran a hardware diagnostic. SMART check passed. Short DST failed. I don't know what to do.

Hi:

When you get a hard drive Short DST failed report, you need to install a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

Maintenance and Service Guide HP 15 Laptop PC

I will give you two options to replace the drive:

You can replace the failed 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

Since your notebook has a M.2 slot that supports M.2 SSD's you can remove the 2.5" mechanical hard drive and install a much faster performing M.2 2280 NVMe SSD.

After you replace the drive, you can use the HP cloud recovery tool and a 32 GB USB flash drive to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

Since you have to use the utility on another PC, you will need to enter your notebook's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.

Your PC's product number is:  6EH24UA#ABA
