HP Pavilion 15-inch Displays
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I am writing about an issue I have come across on my Hp laptop. Unknown if this is related to the problem, but it did recieve some minor trauma not too long before it started to show effects. When powered on, the laptop greets me with a black screen, no boot up, no logo. When the function keys are pressed, they state their function in the bottom left corner (i.e.

F1...System Information, ESC...Pause Startup) but otherwise the entire computer is unresponsive. I have tried a fix found online (Win+B), but when pressed I recieve even less functionality as the screen doesn't even light up, and pressing the function keys even after releasing Win+B is unresponsive. I am greatful for any and all aid I may recieve to help fix this issue. Thank you!

Hello @Gage_

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting

Win+B is different, it is used for BIOS recovery. It looks irrelevant to your problem. What you describe sounds like either hardware issue (less likely) or a software problem (Windows failing to load).

1. Try hard restart/hard reset.

Press the power on-button on your PC and hold it for about 5-10 seconds until your computer powers off completely.

Remove and unplug any external periferals and accessories.

Press once the power-on button to turn on the PC and wait if it will start now. Wait...

If it still fails to load properly, go ahead with the next steps

2. Perform some basic hardware checks to rule out hardware problem

- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)

- Power the computer back on.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

- Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM check (memory check).

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

3. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F11 for System Recovery options.

The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.

Please, perform "System Restore" first in an attempt to fix the issue. Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present. Here is more info:

Thank you for your response! Replying to your statement, I have tried all three fixes, and with each one, I get no result. The screen turns on, showing no logos or anything else usually present. Hitting Escape displays ESC...Pause Startup, but otherwise does not display the Hp Startup Menu, and every other key after hitting Escape becomes unresponsive. Thank you for your patience in helping me solve this issue! P.S. Yes, to be clear, I was tapping the key as stated.

If you attempt to directly press F2  or  F11 instead of Esc, does it make a difference ?

Technically, yes, though the only difference it does make is the text on the bottom of the screen. (Ex: F2...Startup, F11...System Recovery). Anything else remains the same.

Despite these BIOS issues, can you boot to Windows desktop ?

Sadly, no. I have tried many different solutions, and all either cause the entire computer to be unresponsive (the unrelated fix of Ctrl+B) or lead me to the black screen where any function key that is pressed causes the rest of the keys to be unresponsive and details what the key does in the bottom left corner (Rapidly pressing Esc, F2, F11...). Once again, I'd like to thank you for your patience and support on this problem.

Sorry to hear that.

If you did try everything but nothing helped, I am afraid you will need to bring your computer (or ship it) to service - HP Authorized service center or some local reputable IT repair store you trust.

If the computer is still under warranty or with any active Care Packs, you will need to notify HP support first. If you are not sure where such a center is located, please contact HP support for assistance in finding one. Here is more info:
