Nick, this is a temporary fix. This problem will happen again if you restart or sutdown your notebook. My guess is that the way the bios manages the power is probably at fault.
I have been battling with this issue for several months with my hp-j054ca notebook. A temporary fix is to permanently leave your laptop on.
I think HP knows how to fix this issue (through the motherboard) as there are hundreds of people with the same problem. I don't know why they would not provide a permanent fix to this.

That's odd. I've restarted it twice now and it's been fine. I've left it in suspend mode for two nights now and haven't had any issues. I'm hoping you find a fix for your machine. I've worked in IT as a tech and I've seen that pc's have become more complicated to fix as they've become more end-user friendly. It's very beneficial if you can do the work yourself or you pay a guy like me or the tech center $90 an hour to fix things. It's a great idea to spend the extra $160 and get a care pack extended warranty. That's small change if you buy a $700 laptop or desktop. If there's ever a major issue, now it's better to buy a new one after the warranty expires than to fix it, especially if it's a few years old.
