Hello all! I work at a small IT support place on a college campus. I have an HP 15-dy2791wm (6m0z6ua) (HP says its an 15s-fq2000 for some reason on here) in our shop right now that intermittently will not boot and will give a flash code on the caps locks light. I seem to be getting 5 different codes and cannot find almost anything online about it.
The codes are as follows. A dash is a long blink, a * is a short blink, the short blinks appear 2 blinks in quick succession followed by a short pause, each code is followed by a long pause.

I hear no beeps when this occurs either, and there are only white lights, no red.
The computer, when it does turn on, will also occasionally blue screen and have artifacting on the screen like bad ram or GPU. I'm guessing there's something not making a good connection somewhere internally, but I'd like to gain more evidence of that before tearing it down.
I was on chat with HP support for around an hour on Thursday and did not get an answer before I had to leave.

Hi @Goji_Guy,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on the blink codes you’ve provided for the HP Laptop PC 15s, here's a breakdown of possible meanings for each sequence you described. The absence of beeping sounds can also indicate that the issue may not be directly tied to the RAM or other components typically associated with beep codes.
Blink Code Breakdown
- - - ** ** (3 long blinks, 2 short blinks)
- Possible Issue: System board failure. This could indicate a serious hardware issue, potentially with the motherboard or associated circuitry.
**** - - ** (2 short blinks, 2 long blinks)**
- Possible Issue: Memory issue. This typically suggests a problem with RAM. If you're experiencing blue screens and artifacts, this might be related.
**** ** - ** (2 short blinks, 1 long blink)**
- Possible Issue: BIOS recovery. The system may be attempting to recover or initialize the BIOS.
- ** ** ** (1 long blink, 3 short blinks)
- Possible Issue: Graphics card failure. The artifacting and blue screens can be symptomatic of a failing GPU.
- - ** ** (2 long blinks, 2 short blinks)
- Possible Issue: Keyboard failure. However, given your symptoms, this may not be the primary concern.
Suggested Steps
Check RAM:
- Reseat the RAM modules. If there are multiple sticks, try booting with one at a time to see if one is faulty.
Check Connections:
- Open the laptop and ensure all connections (like the GPU, display, and power connections) are secure. Look for signs of damage or corrosion.
Test with External Monitor:
- Connect the laptop to an external monitor to see if the artifacting persists. If it does not, the issue may be related to the laptop’s display or connections.
Run Hardware Diagnostics:
- Use HP’s built-in hardware diagnostics tools if accessible. This can help pinpoint specific hardware failures.
Check for Overheating:
- Ensure the cooling system is working correctly. Overheating can cause boot issues and blue screens.
BIOS Reset:
- Try resetting the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes (if accessible), or use the BIOS recovery options if available.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
