Hello,
An issue just came up with my laptop running Windows 10 Home 64 bit.. After the last Windows 10 update, my laptop will not restart successfully during the process. I get a message saying "No boot device found". When I issue the Ctrl-Alt-Delete, the machine comes up and runs perfectly. Until another update goes on. It only happens, so far, when it restarts after an update. I can restart anytime without a problem and shut it down and power it on without any issue, again, so far.
I reset the BIOS back to factory and did a clean install of Windows 10
Hopefully someone has an idea to help me. Thanking you in advance.
Dan

Hi @Daninbarnegat,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue where your HP 17.3-inch laptop fails to restart successfully after a Windows 10 update, showing a "No boot device found" message, but works fine after a Ctrl-Alt-Delete action. Since you've already reset the BIOS and performed a clean installation of Windows 10, here are a few additional steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Check Boot Order in BIOS:
- Even after resetting to factory settings, the boot order might be misconfigured. Access the BIOS by pressing Esc or F10 when powering on the laptop.
- Verify that your primary boot device (usually the hard drive or SSD) is set as the first boot device.
Update or Reinstall Drivers:
- Ensure all your drivers, especially for the storage controller (SATA, AHCI, or NVMe), are up to date. Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause boot issues after updates.
- Visit HP’s website for the latest drivers for your model or use Windows Update to check for driver updates.
Run Windows 10's Startup Repair:
- If the issue occurs after updates, try running the built-in Windows Startup Repair tool.
- You can access this by booting from a Windows installation media (USB or DVD) and selecting Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Startup Repair.
Disable Fast Startup:
- Sometimes, Windows 10's Fast Startup can cause issues during restarts after updates.
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable, and uncheck Turn on fast startup.
Check the Hard Drive for Errors:
- Run a hard drive check to ensure there are no underlying issues with the disk.
- Open a Command Prompt (admin) and type chkdsk /f and press Enter. You may need to restart for it to check and fix any disk errors.
Check for UEFI/Legacy Boot Mode:
- If your system was originally set up with UEFI mode and now uses Legacy mode or vice versa, it can cause boot issues.
- In the BIOS, check the boot mode under Boot Options or Boot Order and ensure it matches the configuration of your system.
Check for Disk Health Using HP Diagnostics:
- HP offers built-in diagnostic tools to check your system’s hardware health.
- You can access it by pressing F2 during boot to run the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool and check for issues with the hard drive or other components.
Windows Update Issues:
- If the problem only appears after certain updates, it's possible that a specific update is causing this. You can try rolling back recent updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history and uninstall recent updates one by one to see if that resolves the issue.
By following these steps, you should be able to further narrow down the cause and potentially resolve the issue with your laptop's boot process after updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
