Are all my photos and documents gone?
I bought this computer about two months ago. About a month later, I uploaded all of my photos to it and downloaded everything from Onedrive to it. It was working fine just a little while ago. I literally left the room to fetch blank DVDs to burn all this data. When I returned, the screen was black. I clicked the start button and up came the dreaded blue screen along with this message:
"Recovery
Your PC/device needs to be repaired
The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors.
File:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
Error code: 0XC0000034
You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have installation media – – like a disk or USB device – – contact your PC administrator or PC/device manufacturer.
Press ESC for UEFI for more settings"
Has everything been erased?
The only thing new on the computer is a moviemaking program that I purchased a few nights ago.
I have no backups of anything: not my data, not the OS.
What do I do now?

Either you can use LiveCD to boot upon and try salvaging the data.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
For booting, disable secure boot and enable legacy:
http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04784866
Then boot from CD: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443326
Or you can remove hard drive from its bay, connect to another PC using SATA to USB adapter. Then use explorer to copy the files you need.
After salvaging your personal data, do extensive hard drive and memory tests from BIOS/UEFI by tapping F2 key as you power on laptop. Let it finish.

It sounds as though removing the hard drive is the best way to save my data, yes? Is that terribly difficult with directions off the internet? Or do I need to take it somewhere and pay someone? As is obvious, I know nothing about computers.
After I save my data, I'll come back and follow your instructions to reboot and all.
Thanks so much.

Any idea how/why this would happen to a two- or three-month-old computer?
I haven't checked, but I will hazard a guess that I am three days past warranty.

If in warranty, I'll get help from certified HP technician.
Operating system can get corrupted anytime from many factors
After you've salvaged data, test your hard drive and RAM as I suggested.
If it passed everything, then do a HP factory reset of Windows 10 by tapping f11 key as you power on laptop
You can try repair of OS boot files alternatively
Have you created HP recovery USB after first setup of this notebook?
