Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So computer froze up as it sometimes does and so I reset it. Said it was installing an update but then it kept getting stuck on reboot. Wouldn't let me boot into safe mode. So i did the 3 reset and went into the bios check and tried rolling back from whatever the update was. Then it just went into a blank screen upon any restart.  No logo no anything. No safe mode nothing. So i did the f2 check and got error code: PUQ2MX 80T9SF MFPWMF 60S103 hdd smart check passed short dst failed. So my question is what does that mean? What can I try? And if the hard drive is toast or failing how can i get my personal files off?

Hi:

The error code reported translates to one word...Failed.

You will need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system in order to fix the problem.

It is highly unlikely you will be able to recover any data from the hard drive if you can't get into Windows now.

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

After you replace the hard drive, you can reinstall W10 for free by creating bootable installation media using the media creation tool at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

Then you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

If you want to try to read and copy files off the dead hard drive, you can purchase a SATA to USB adapter, plug it into a working PC and see if you can read/copy any files from the drive.
