Hi, I have an HP laptop. When I turn it on, the screen goes black and starts to flicker. After I restart it, the laptop works fine. However, when I turn it off and back on again, the screen starts flickering again.
How can you help me resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Hi @Willi93,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query.
I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing a flickering screen issue when turning on your HP laptop, but it works fine after a restart, it may be related to the operating system or display settings. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot this issue:
Update Graphics Drivers
- Go to Device Manager → Display adapters.
- Right‑click your GPU (Intel/Nvidia/AMD) → Update driver.
- Better: download the latest drivers directly from Intel/Nvidia/AMD websites.
- Outdated or corrupted drivers are the most common cause of flickering
Update BIOS & Firmware
- Visit HP’s support site for your exact laptop model.
- Install the latest BIOS update and system firmware.
- BIOS fixes often address startup display glitches.
Adjust Power Settings
- Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Advanced settings.
- Under Intel Graphics Settings / Display, disable panel self‑refresh.
- This prevents flicker during wake/boot transitions.
Adjust the Display Refresh Rate
- Go to 'Settings' > 'System' > 'Display' > 'Advanced Display Settings.'
- Select 'Display adapter properties for Display 1.'
- Go to the 'Monitor' tab and select a different refresh rate if available.
Take care and have an amazing day!
