15-ba005cy
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The hard drive failed in this HP 15-ba005cy. I'm trying to reinstall windows 10 on the new hard drive but the unit seems to ignore the DVD drive or any USB stick plugged in. I'm unable to change the boot settings in the BIOS. If I press F10 or select exit and save it doesn't save the changes I've made.

I'm stuck at this point until I can save the changes in the BIOS to change the boot order. It also pressing F9 to change boot options doesn't work. When I select EFI DVD / CD or EFI USB Drive it just gives me this error.

The selected boot device failed. Press <Enter> to Continue.

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Notebook - 15-ba005cy and are unable to reinstall Win10 on a new hard drive. The laptop does not recognize the DVD and the USB stick. The boot device settings made in the BIOS does not work and the F9 boot options do not work and "error appears saying "The selected boot device failed. Press <Enter> to Continue. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did you create the recovery disks and the USB recovery kit earlier or did you order them from HP?
  • Have you disconnected other devices/peripherals (like a USB printer, another USB flash drive, etc.)from the laptop?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

If you see boot manager and boot from EFI file but nothing else, the USB thumb drive is not detected.

Please, perform the steps above

- ensure the USB stick is intact and working

- disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy mode

- save the changes and proceed with F9 mode.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know the outcome. All the best! 🙂

I'm unable to disable secure mode due to a problem with the bios not saving the settings. When I disable secure boot and enable legacy boot it goes back to secure boot and legacy boot disabled if you go back into the bios. Also it never lets you select anything but EFI devices to boot from under the F9 options.

I've bought a retail copy of windows 10 to reinstall on this laptop. I've used a couple of programs such as Rufus and YUMI to create a usb boot disk. Rufus lets you create a UEFI bootable usb stick. I've also tried several different USB thumb drives. I can get them to boot on another computer but not this one.

The boot from EFI file under the F9 options doesn't seem to work. It just gives me a window that says "File Explorer" with a black box at the bottom. Nothing else happens after that.

As per my understanding, the BIOS will act like this if the CMOS battery is weak or if the BIOS is corrupt.

You may try to perform a BIOS recovery. Please refer to "Step 2, Step 3 and Step 4 from this link.

If the issue persists post a BIOS recovery then I suggest you to reach out to our HP phone support to explore the hardware service options.

Hope this does the trick. Let me know if you have any questions. All the best! 🙂
