Hello,

I am helping a friend who had a tech support scam on his computer so it was infested with malware etc. I have some tech tools on a USB drive that I boot computers into. The computer wasn't able to boot to the USB so I changed the boot mode in bios to legacy boot, and changed the boot order to boot to the USB drive first.

Now, when I turn on the laptop it only shows a black screen. There is no cursor or nothing. You can't boot into BIOS, or harwdare diagnostics. It shows just a blank screen but it is clear the screen is on because there is a backlight functioning. The keyboard shows lights for example, if I remove the ram, the caps lock key will flash which is a message stating there is no ram in the computer. have tried with test ram, their ram, no ram, different display, with battery unplugged, with cmos unplugged, with hd unplugged. the only time i ever got anything different was when there was no ram and instead of a black backlit display it was just no backlight and the caps lock key was doing a flash code of no ram detected. every other time its just a blank black screen with a backlight when you power it on.

Again, connecting to an external monitor shows nothing. There is just a blank backlit screen.

I also tried removing the power cord and battery, holding the power button down for 15 seconds and I tried again but for 30 seconds per another forum post to reset the hardware but this did nothing.

Looking for any solutions.

I found the resolution to this issue. The reply by this other person doesn't help at all. Looks like a robot typed it.

Solution

Enter Bios Recovery Mode

1) turn laptop off

2) press and hold windows key + B or V

3) while holding, press power button for 2 to 3 seconds.

the laptop should boot into a bios recovery option which will allow you to fix the issue.

In my case, I didn't get a bios recovery window it just booted into windows 10. I checked the bios after and noticed it disabled legacy boot which is what fixed the issue.

Just a little bit of research and now solved.

Thanks,

Sean

When using operating systems that support booting only from Legacy BIOS, you must use the Legacy BIOS boot mode. When using operating systems that support booting from Legacy BIOS or UEFI BIOS, you can use either boot mode. However, once a boot mode is chosen, and an operating system is installed, the installation can be started only using the same mode that was used for the installation.

  • When an operating system is installed using Legacy BIOS boot mode, the operating system can be started only in Legacy BIOS boot mode.

  • When an operating system is installed using UEFI boot mode, the operating system can be started only in UEFI boot mode.
