HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cp0000 (2Q7W9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, after choosing a firmware update from windows 11 update the screen is black. Only the On/Off-light is on and the fan is running, that's it. I try all recovery procedures i found in the internet: <windows><c>, <windows><v> and recover from usb-drive ... no success. I bought the laptop five month ago. If anyone has an idea what i can do, please tell me. I don't want to send it to HP; there must be a quicker solution.

Hi @pinguinfreund,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion 17 laptop may have encountered an issue during or after a firmware update, causing the black screen on boot. Since you’ve already tried recovery steps like pressing Windows + C and Windows + V, here are a few additional steps that might help resolve the issue.

Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Unplug the power cable.
  • Remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power (and battery if removed) and try turning the laptop back on.

Check External Display Output

Sometimes the laptop might be outputting to an external monitor. To test this:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV.
  • Try pressing Windows + P (multiple times) to toggle display modes, or use the function key for display output (usually F4, F8, or F10 depending on the model).
  • If an external display works, the internal screen might have been disabled or may be malfunctioning.

Perform BIOS Reset

If there’s an issue with the BIOS settings:

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect the power.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds to reset the BIOS.
  • Reconnect the power and try turning the laptop on again.

Boot into Safe Mode (if possible)

  • You could try to boot into Safe Mode to roll back the firmware or drivers.
  • To do this:
    • Turn off your laptop.
    • Press the Power button and immediately start pressing the F8 key repeatedly.
    • If you see the "Advanced Boot Options" screen, select Safe Mode and hit Enter.
  • Once in Safe Mode, you can try uninstalling recent updates or rolling back the firmware.

Perform System Recovery from USB Drive

If your system is completely unresponsive, you might need to create a bootable USB recovery drive:

  • On another PC, create a Windows 11 installation media using the Windows Media Creation Tool.
  • Insert the USB drive into your HP laptop, then boot from the USB by pressing Esc or F9 (depending on your model) during startup.
  • Choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair.

Update BIOS from USB (if accessible)

  • If the laptop still doesn't boot, you may need to update the BIOS from a USB drive. You can find the latest BIOS update for your specific HP model on the HP support website. You would need to download the BIOS update onto a USB drive and use the HP BIOS update tool (usually accessible through the Esc key during boot).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, i try all of your suggestions, but without success. Recovering the bios from an usb-stick seems to function ok, but after restart there is no change ... the On/Off-Switch is lighted and the cooler fan is running.

That's all. No display, no Windows. The laptop is 5 month old; i hope there will be a solution.
