HP 2000-2c00 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit)
Hello, so my HP 2000-2c00 Notebook PC Running Windows 8 won't start up. Whenever turned on, the screen lights up but it remains blank, and will stay like this no matter how long I wait.

This happened after I tried to perform a factory reset; the progress went up to 4%, then it failed so I powered it off. It stopped working after that.

I have tried pressing the typical f2, f10, and escape buttons, it does not go into diagnostics and BIOS. Instead, it shows me some text on the lower left of the screen indicating which service I was trying to access (for example, when I try to go into BIOS options, it says: "F10... BIOS Setup Options." ) It will then remain like that and not proceed into BIOS no matter how long I wait.

I would really appreciate any help with this problem, this laptop is relatively new and I have a lot of tasks to accomplish very soon so any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @Kappaccino,

I reviewed the post comprehensively. Brilliant troubleshooting. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue and deducing correctly that the hard drive is not getting detected. It could make a certain Sherlock Holmes turn green with envy. 🙂  Hats off to you on that score. 🙂

Please check this link out for the “PXE-E61: Media Test Failure” error. Link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00488753

It certainly looks like the computer has a hardware issue and needs to be serviced if it does not work even after a bios update. Possible hard drive failure going by the error message “Boot Device Not Found”. Please follow all the recommended steps in the document and if it does not correct the situation, please contact a local Best Buy or

Staples technician to get the computer checked and serviced.

Hi @Kappaccino,

Good Day! Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! I read your post about boot issues on your notebook. I will be delighted to assist you with this. 🙂

Fabulous diagnosis and superb analysis of the issue before posting.  Kudos to you on that score. It is always a privilege to work with technical specialists like you. 🙂

You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. We greatly appreciate you for doing business with HP. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • How did you perform a recovery?
  • Was it from the F11 recovery partition or was it from the recovery media?

For starters please perform a hard reset from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768

  • Then check if the unit runs diagnostics pressing the “ESC key” at startup and choosing the correct options.
  • If this does not work try with an external USB  keyboard as the keyboard may be faulty.
  • If that does not work, please try to perform a bios roll back from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

and make sure to try both the options to restore the bios. If it works, please run a system recovery to factory settings by contacting HP phone support to order recovery media. Link: http://hp.com/contacthp and follow the on-screen instructions.

If this does not do the trick for you, then the issue is hardware related and the computer needs to be serviced. Please check with a local Best Buy or Staples technician to get this fixed as service options with HP may not be available as it is not manufactured anymore.

Hope this helps.   I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

Hi, DavidSMP! 😁

Thank you so much for noticing my post. I am delighted to know that HP values its customers and that you are willing to help. 😁

I performed a recovery/reset through what I believe is the recovery media; it was a button located in the PC Settings under the "General" tab, and it said something like "Revert PC back to its factory settings."

I have tried some of the solutions you proposed, and here are the following results:
-Hard Reset: No significant changes. Laptop still fails to start up (performed thrice)

-ESC key: It displays a small bit of text which says "ESC...Pause Startup" but nothing else, even after a few minutes of waiting

-BIOS Roll Back: Screen remains blank and unlit even after 5 minutes of holding down the windows and B key, although the Caps Lock button light starts flashing in 1-2 second intervals after a while. (performed twice)

-External Keyboard test was not performed because I sadly don't have one in reach. 😕

Does this mean that the issue is surely hardware related and I have to take it to a service shop? If ever, is there any way I can attempt to fix the hardware myself?

Anyway, thanks again for your help and genuine concern in this issue. I will definitely continue using HP products; they have served me well for the past few years, and especially so now that I know how helpful your customer support is. 😄

Have a great week! 😁

I just tried performing the BIOS roll back using the external usb drive. The HP BIOS Update screen still does not show, although after about 10 minutes of holding down the keys it displays this:

"Boot Device Not Found

Please Install an operating systen on your hard disk.

Hard Disk (3F0)

F2   System Diagnostics"

However, through this screen I am able to access System Diagnostics (F2) and BIOS Setup Options (F10).

I selected Hard Drive Check, Quick Check in the F2 menu.  It came back with Smart Check: Not Installed and Short DST:  Not Installed. What does this mean?

I also tried going into F10 BIOS settings and reenabling Legacy Options, which almost worked. I had to enter a 4 digit code, afterwards it brought me to a screen with large text, and this is what it says at the bottom:

"Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Series v1.27

PXE-E61:Media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F:Exiting PXE ROM.

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

Tried pressing all the keys, it just keeps repeating this message... what does it mean by boot disk? I am starting to get quite confused 😕

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
